Norwegian research suggests that around half of the study participants has full recovery in first-episode schizophrenia

Todays knowledge on this subject is so minor that most of professionals believe that only a minority of people suffering from schizophrenia can be treated the right way, and even smaller number can resume their lives without medications. This may also be the reason why we have so much negativity and pessimism around patients and diagnosis.

"Having such a high proportion be well-functioning shows that schizophrenic patients have a greater potential to get well than previous research has shown," says Professor Anne-Kari Torgalsbøen at the University of Oslo’s Department of Psychology.

Study was conducted on 28 first-episode patients over four yeas including six follow-ups. What defined the recovery was:

Working or studying, having symptoms that are stably mild or absent for two years or more, having contact with friends and/or dating, participating in leisure activities and living independently define full recovery.

This might be one of the huge breakthrough in psychology, not only concerning patients and doctors but their families, relatives and friends as well.
Professor Anne-Kari Torgalsbøen is specialized in clinical psychology and is following 28 young adults for ten years (recruited within five months of being hospitalized or starting outpatient treatment for first-episode mental disorders). This study shows how the patients are doing after four years, as stated in the European Psychiatry journal.

"Schizophrenia means that the patient has had serious delusions or hallucinations, and a big drop in their ability to function," says Torgalsbøen.

Patients have received diferent forms of treatment by recommendations of "Norwegian Directorate of Health’s national professional guidelines".

Important part of the treatment is explaining to patients required information about the diagnosis and what can they do to live with the mental disorder and their integration into family and society.

“This is called psychoeducational treatment, which according to the research yields the best results,” says Torgalsbøen.

Patients have also participated in group discussions, and some received cognitive therapy. Cognitive therapy involves patients working to change their delusions as well as how they think about their own experiences and psychosis.

"They get training in thinking critically about how realistic their thoughts are," says Torgalsbøen.

One of the reasons why this study is showing such successful results is because of the early treatment they received as opposed to older schizophrenic patients who have not received the same early, research-based treatment.

“It’s important to emphasize that these patients received early treatment. For example, we know that cognitive therapy works better when the patient gets help early so that the irrational thoughts don’t get a foothold," says Torgalsbøen.

As someone who has direct and indirect contact with three people suffering from schizophrenia I am feeling so overwhelmed by this discovery. Finally something is moving on when it seemed like a dead end.

I think a lot of illnesses do have a better chance of recovery if they have been treated early on, but this is good news indeed. :)

True to that!

@psyceratopsb,

Interesting development. The inter-play between biology and behavior and vice versa (which is the cause, which is the effect) is fascinating. That thinking about thinking could be so potent .... is cause to pause.

Quill.

I would say it is all about "programing"...and the earliest the best...just like in normally developing brain...
