Why Blockchain?

in science •  7 years ago

With the explosion of investment over the last year in anything “blockchain,” there’s also been an explosion in the number of companies trying to capitalize on the market’s irrational exuberance. Deloitte Consulting recently ran an assessment into the state of all things blockchain and discovered around 20,000 (!) abandoned FinTech Github repositories.

Whereas it has become the norm to ask for investor’s money way before anything tangible even exists, we at Scienceroot strongly believe in creating a working prototype before opening ourselves up to the public. “Blockchain” is more to us than an overused catchword to posh up startups and ideas.

Enable Global Scale

Given the increasing globalization of scientific research, for any platform to be useful to today’s scientist, it must be global.By integrating a financial incentive for work performed or articles published in our platform, the greatest obstacle to overcome was to ensure the viability of payments globally. Utilizing the blockchain grants us the opportunity to launch our own cryptocurrency.

The Science Token (ST) will serve as a means for borderless and fast transactions on the Scienceroot platform, allowing our users to reap the rewards of their work. A finite number of tokens will be made available, after which no further units will enter circulation.

Improve Incentives

We aim to cut out as many fees as possible and monetize the peer review process. If that can be done it will have a huge impact on the academic infrastructure of today.

Since what we want most is to enable users (hopefully that includes you, too!), we equip you with the ability to make use of smart contracts. Smart contracts allow for our userbase to set up contracts with each other that are automatically triggered once a certain condition has been fulfilled.

A great example to this is the actual sale of what you have written. Employing smart contracts empowers you to push your publication to sale and start earning directly.

What Advantages does Scienceroot Have Over the Status Quo?

Lower Fees

First of all, we aren’t big on fees.! Driven by the idea of giving back to the community, we pass the sales revenue right back into your wallet. But reducing fees is just the beginning.

Efficient Collaboration

Let’s say you are at risk of missing a crucial deadline and need a hand with research, but from someone experienced. This is where our platform jumps into action.

First, pick an expert from our database. After you and the expert of your liking have agreed on the terms of your research agreement, you set up a smart contract on our blockchain. This smart contract has the condition to be executed once you have received a file containing the results. Following the fulfillment of the condition, the contract triggers and conducts what it has been instructed to do.

We developed this feature because we absolutely love the idea of allowing for more complex agreements between humans making use of Scienceroot, without us restricting, interfering or regulating.

Immutability

Immutability is considered crucial to ensure coherence of all publications.

Every publication on the Scienceroot platform can be tracked and its lifelong accuracy ensured. This immutability is critical for ensuring the dissemination of information over long time periods, especially in a long-term research context.

Opening Science to the Public

Our aim is to make science available to the public by creating an open ecosystem.

Users who aren’t scientists themselves but realize the potential in your showcase can instantly donate Science Tokens to your effort because of the ease of transactions made available by the Science Token cryptocurrency. This means that as a researcher you’ll be able to showcase your findings or ideas to the widest audience possible with the potential of receiving valuable donations from non-traditional sources.

You’ll be able to build yourself an audience and make yourself heard!

All of us here at Scienceroot hope you will redefine the public’s image of science with us by opening it up as never before.

A good idea. Having everything decentralized is better, but can those research articles be open to public at free of cost ?
Can institutions/schools/lab can participate in this ?

Research articles can be made open with an Article Processing Charge. We welcome institutions, laboratories and academics to our platform
