HUMAN SETTLEMENT ON MARS
Mars One is a not for profit foundation with the goal of establishing a permanent human settlement on Mars. To prepare for this settlement the first unmanned mission is scheduled to depart in 2020. Crews will depart for their one-way journey to Mars starting in 2026; subsequent crews will depart every 26 months after the initial crew has left for Mars. Mars One is a global initiative aiming to make this everyone's mission to Mars, including yours.
We live on the third planet from the sun. Beautiful earth. The densest planet in the Solar System. The earth is the only planet known to harbor life. I want to repeat...
THE ONLY PLANET KNOWN TO HARBOR LIFE!
For thousands of years, people have been debating about the origins of earth. We all have our own religions and beliefs but this is science and not religion. I often have scientific discussions with my students in the Science class, and tell them that religion and Science never belong in the same sentence. They all have great thoughts and this can get into a very heated discussion.
Scientists say that the earth developed from a molten mass of rock and metals simmering at about 3600° Fahrenheit which is approximately 2000° Celsius. Now- imagine melted rock and metal. This would have been a crazy mass and nothing would have been able to survive in this mass. Cloud elements included the following elements. Hydrogen, helium, carbon, oxygen, iron, phosphorus, sulfur, nitrogen, silicon and nickel.
When the Earth cooled down, heavier metals like nickel and iron sunk deep into the molten core. The elements like silicon rose to the surface. After cooling down a bit, it began to form the crust of the earth. Other elements helped to form a multilayered crust. Melting of ice comets created steam, through the volcanic gases and after a million more years, the earth formed an atmosphere. Due to the heat, rain condensed, and cooled down the crust. Water gathered in the low spots and cracks, and formed oceans, rivers, streams and lakes.
Today we live on a beautiful planet. We have beautiful mountains, trees, flowers, animals, humans and the best technology. But we as humans, are destroying the earth in the worst possible way that we can. We are destroying our own life support system. We pollute the earth, we degrade the land and we are endangering our own lives and the lives of many other animal species on earth. We have put ourselves in a difficult situation, and we have nowhere else to turn to. We now need a way out. The Mars one project might give humankind the opportunity to survive for a few more centuries.

The Mars trip is a very expensive and risky mission. There is no infrastructure, no atmosphere and no systems in place. The only way to start this process is to create a permanent settlement as it is cheaper than to create a return trip. The mission is to create a habitable settlement before the first crew depart. Hardware will be sent in advance and during the 6 to 7 month journey for the permanent settlers, the planet will be made habitable by robotic systems. This unmanned mission is scheduled for 2024. That is 8 years from now.
So how will we create an atmosphere on Mars? How will we create water, oxygen, food? Well, this will happen much like the process when earth was created.

The first settlers on Mars will only be performing three main tasks.
1. Construction - The first crew will devote most of their time to change their new home into a comfortable place to live. They will set up all equipment, build greenhouses, and solar panels. Most of their time will be spend to prepare food and to plant crops. The first crew will also be responsible for the creation of the hardware for the second crew. The main goal is to create a spacious environment to live in where they can also grow trees.
2. Maintenance - Life on Mars depends on technology. All these systems need to be regularly checked and maintained to ensure the life on Mars.
3. Research - Astronauts will do their own research, and collect data to transmit back to Earth.
Astronauts are currently being trained for the mission. This is a permanent settlement and these Astronauts will never be able to return home to Earth. They would however be able to communicate via email and sms or even whats app messages.
I could write about this mission for hours. There is so much information available online. Here are a few videos about the water creation and how life on Mars can be created.

But are we really ready for this. Can we turn Mars into Earth? Are we playing God? When will the first people be able to move to Mars? Not in our lifetimes. But maybe this gives our children's children, hope for the future. With advanced technology anything is possible today. Are you ready to change this:

What's the feeling here, is Mars One a scam that will accomplish nothing, or an honest attempt that might actually succeed? My research indicates they have raised about US$700,000, have a somewhat reasonable plan that has to be doubled in size to be technically feasible http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0094576515004294, a decent fund raising website with good mainstream press excitement, and a plan for a reality tv program about astronaut selection that should eventually launch. Mars colonization can be done with a very large amount of money, but I'm not sure this attempt will be able to raise enough funds. Your thoughts?
