What are solutions for ecosystem divisions as we continue to "develop" this planet? @mountainwashere inspired this post based on their post regarding surviving the asphalt wasteland.
Introduction
What are the main challenges that we pose on ecosystems through our development? More concrete jungle or connect the zones between the concrete jungles?
We do, through our construction cut ecosystems up. Highways are bad for this. They help us, move our bodies and good around rapidly but fully agree that they divide up zones and may transit, especially for land animals difficult to impossible.
Two solutions to the division
While reading their post, I kept thinking of the cool wildlife underpasses in near Banff in the Canadian Rockies (photo 1). So figured I would post them here in case you or your followers wanted additional insight to a potential solution to one of the problems and challenges they posed
Photo 1 - this moose is cruising under the highway and doesn't have to face rush hour Source I also suspect @shasta would like this since they always have such great moose photos (unfortunately not a personal photo here).
One solution but of course, would be interesting to know what the research says about how well it works.
I like the other alternative for connection divided populations which is the overpass (Photo 2, Reference 1)
Photo 2. Looks like a nice place to cross. Photo source
Conclusions
We have solutions post development, but the real question is, to me:
How can we help in areas that are currently being developing, espcially in areas of the "developing world" or even "underdeveloped" parts of the developed world?
What can developing areas or nations do to build these solutions in at the front end during the design phase as opposed to retro-fitting to help fix this problem? Building solutions at the design stage is always more cost efficient and easier to plan for than doing something after-the-fact. But there is always cost. Will people, taxpayers, the public agree to the cost?
Can we stop the concrete jungle or at least reduce the impact of it?
Speaking of concrete jungle, music always puts things in perspective!

NOTE:
*Sorry for all of the questions, questions lead to more answers but I left more questions than usual here. Food for thought!
See, I knew this would make an excellent post on its own!

Those critter over under passes are really cool!
I got to see the overpass one when driving through
Jasper national park, Banff Canada. They were so
amazing to see in person! I would hope they are
set up where animals have crossed for many moons.
Thank you so much for the mention @snowyknight! 💕
The concrete jungle reminds me of the Borg world
from one them star trek movies! ack!
Take care my friend! ⚔

Cool glad that you got to see one during your journeys! I want to look more into the science about how the decisions were made regarding location, etc. Agreed that animals, like people have habits so hope they picked a moose superhighway to cross!
No worries for the mention. Great photos deserve it friend. Have a good one! Keep Yaking! Hahahaha

Be interesting to hear what you find out!
Around here there are moose crossing signs and
they really do cross a lot near these locations!
Any Yak crossing signs? :-)

Ok, I'll get into some serious research about this.
Really nice photo and sign. I like the one from NH personally. This is a meme.. from here.
I have a couple more from my personal collection. Hmmm maybe a post on this...

I really like this post as a conversation starter. The question you ask about stopping the concrete jungle is one that resonates with me on a daily basis. I think a lot about VR in this context. I have seen some very basic things in VR that have really blown my mind. For example, the "California Redwoods" environment in the Steam VR home screen thing. This was my genuine reaction to seeing it for the first time:
(Hopefully the time point 222 embeds, otherwise skip ahead to 3:42 in that video).
I've been trying to collect as high resolution nature footage that I can in the hopes that we will soon have better algorithms for using 2d pictures to texture 3d scenes. I believe this is important because the world needs to be exposed to nature in order to appreciate it, but we also cannot expose 7.5 billion people to sensitive habitats in order for people to want to protect those places.

Hey thanks for stopping by and for adding this cool video too! 2D to 3D is really cool technology. Have you looked into structure from motion (SfM)? This is, to my knowledge the best way to do photogramatry to get structure (3D) from a number of different photos... check it out!
Cheers and welcome to the conversation!

Structure from motion
Structure from motion (SfM) is a photogrammetric range imaging technique for estimating three-dimensional structures from two-dimensional image sequences that may be coupled with local motion signals. It is studied in the fields of computer vision and visual perception. In biological vision, SfM refers to the phenomenon by which humans (and other living creatures) can recover 3D structure from the projected 2D (retinal) motion field of a moving object or scene.

I am familiar with the general idea but hadn't heard it worded like that. The academic work I do is influenced by much earlier neural models of direction and orientation like Sporns1989:
It's quite a complicated business though, and the papers I've seen that claim to automate the process in some way are quite intense, e.g. Li, Y., Pizlo, Z., & Steinman, R. M. (2009). A computational model that recovers the 3D shape of an object from a single 2D retinal representation. Vision Research, 49(9), 979–991. http://doi.org/10.1016/j.visres.2008.05.013

That looks really cool! "Academic work you do" - cool. Maybe you should do a post on this work? @steemstem is a good place to look for similar and like-minded individuals. Cool video too and hopefully I can find some time to check out the paper too. Looking forward to seeing more of your photography!
