Space-Pictures: The Andromeda Galaxy

in science •  8 years ago

The Andromeda Galaxy is the closest galaxy to our own, the Milky Way.

Every point of light in the pictures and video is at least one star. Many are more than one. Many have their own planets, some will be like Earth. There is no reason to stay on this planet where there is so much going on around us.

The Future of Andromeda

Andromeda is on a crash course with our home galaxy, the Milky way. Luckily, this isn’t anytime soon. It will happen in about 4 billion years, because it is over 2.5 million light years away.[1]

Basic Facts

Before we knew other galaxies existed we thought they were just “nebula”, which are just clouds of gas and dust. Later Edwin Hubble calculated that the Andromeda nebula was way too far away to be in our own galaxy, proving that many of these nebula were actually external galaxies. Now one of the most important telescopes in space, is named after Edwin Hubble, the Hubble Space telescope.[2]

Andromeda is far bigger than the Milky way. Andromeda is estimated to have over a trillion stars and is 220,000 light years across, while our home galaxy only has somewhere between 200-400 billion stars and is only 100,000 light years. [3]

Beautiful. Looks like fireworks in the sky :-)

everywhere looks like that, you just need a big enough telescope ;)

Beautiful

Yeah, just one more reason to fund science :)

We should feel really lucky because our big brother is coming to visit us.

That's one way to say it lol
