What we have done: plastic sea

in science •  7 years ago

Hello, my friends. Today I want to discuss an important topic. Mankind has achieved great success in the industry and one of these results is plastic. Nowadays it is impossible to imagine the world without plastic and plastic products. According to Wikipedia, plastic appeared recently - about 150 years ago. Inventor Alexander Parkes of Birmingham got plastic at first. Using in their experiments, nitrocellulose, alcohol and camphor, a substance which is called parkesine and first showed it at the international exhibition in London in 1862. Do you know that about 50 years ago, humanity invented a plastic bottle? Nowadays, millions of bottles are produced and thrown out every year. And every year the waste from plastic bottles and packages grow, due to the fact that there is an increasing number of products that are Packed in plastic packaging.A huge amount of garbage in the streets of the city make you think about the question: where to put plastic waste? I know this environmental problem has long been known and discussed. But until recently, I had no idea how widespread this environmental disaster was. I think you are too.

The following video is posted on youtube.

Video evidence of irreversible ecological disaster. Under water, instead of accumulations of fish, jellyfish and other inhabitants of the sea floats garbage. From organics there only a small number of branches and leaves, and basically the diver surround packages, straws, bottles, glasses and fragments of the various products made of plastic. The problem of plastic is in Bali for a long time and is acute. In December, even signs were installed on the beaches, in which the local authorities apologized to tourists for the mountains of garbage. Look at the photo and you will understand what I'm talking about:

Scientists have long been concerned about the problem of plastic contamination. Plastic entering the ocean, swallowed by fish, birds and other marine life. What is the result?

It turns out, that the plastic particles were found in the digestive tracts of turtles, seabirds, fish, whales and plankton, and now he got to the seals. Can you imagine that? In the course of studying the consequences of pollution of the world ocean with plastic, scientists have long said that microparticles can be transmitted through the food chain to the highest predators. They have already been found in whales eating plankton, and now received the first examples of "travel" plastic from fish to seals.

The study was conducted by biologists from the research center Plymouth Marine Laboratory. Scientists have put a 16-week experiment involving 31 long-tailed seals. Animals were fed Atlantic mackerel (lat. Scomber scombrus) caught in different parts of the world. Based on the analysis of seals feces, plastic particles were found in almost half of the cases. In order to understand the volume of plastic in fish organisms, the researchers separately considered three dozen mackerels. Microfibres and debris were found in ten of them, that is, 30% of marine fish have already experienced plastic pollution. At the same time, some fragments turned out to be relatively large-up to 6 mm.

The possibility of transferring plastic up the food chain has not been questioned before, but there was not enough evidence. Scientific work is filling this gap. In addition, she once again emphasizes the importance of the problem: it is obvious that the fish "supplies" plastic not only seals and other marine predators, but also to man. Maybe people will start to think about this ecological disaster and understand how far it has come. Thanks for reading!

People destroy nature... It's sad...

Thank you so much for your comment!

Its just awful how we destroy beautiful nature. We have the same problem now in Croatia. Just look at this photo of Dubrovnik (King's Landing)

Brate kakvi divljaci

Jel da, debili

The game of plastic thrones :(

Just an awful thing to see

Thank you for your concern!

I think 90% of people look in to this video because you are in the bikini.
We are self destructing species. Maybe it is meant to be like that.
If you can't adjust you disappear

I hope, people will look at this video not only because of a girl in the bikini and think about this problem.

I used to work in the European Parliament for the Green party. They are people who should be the ones who will make new laws and change this terrible plastic reality. Unfortunetly, they don't care... i am planing to write a post about what I saw there soon. :/

It's a great idea!!! I'd be interested to read your post about it.

Thank you for bringing attention to the "global catastrophe!"
This problem has long passed the prevention stage. Clean up is now extremely expensive, but, we - the world - everyone must start!

Thank you for stopping by!

This problem is global and critically urgent. The world is distracted by "global warming" which is tragic - much can be done with a lot less that has already been spent on the fictitious "crisis" - I know, 98% of the scientist agreed ...
I am a scientist, a Chemical Engineer. I also understand that there are facts, numbers, and trends for this environmental tragedy that are lacking in the "global warming" push - 400 ppm - parts per million? give me a break. Here, no one can deny that this is a whole lot more and severe than any ppm of any gas.

I was thinking about it few says ago because I live near the beack and when I take a walk in einter ther is a lot of plastic and other thing and Its a very sad view... and I recycle but at the moment there is too much pastic everywhere all that you buy at the stores has plastic even in cosmetic or washing products have microplastics... Too much...

You are 100% right!!!

I started driving for Uber recently. They encourage their drivers to give bottled water to passengers. That's a horrible wasteful practice. No, I don't carry bottled water, but I wish Uber would stop telling their drivers to contribute to this waste of plastic. Yes, that says nothing about the gas wasted driving but there's no need to add wasted plastic on top of that. Carry a water bottle instead.

I agree, that this practice will not help to solve the problem, but will only aggravate the situation. I hope, all people will think about this problem.

Definitely one of the big problems of our times. How can someone treat the oceans this way?

Unfortunately, I have no answer to that question... Thank you for comment!

This is a huge problem!! I live in a beach resort community, where are beautiful beaches are what drives our economy(tourism and fishing.) Several years ago a plastic bag ban law was passed. Yayyyy!! However, the greed and short slightness of our politicians overturned this ban recently. So once again these bags will be making there way out onto our beaches and endangering our marine life. So sad.

This is sad news, I hope things will change for the better!

Indeed, we have a plastic problem. After swimming with wild humpback whales in the Dominican, this is the coast we came home to. Let's fix this mess already!G0016442.JPG
