Understanding Research - X kills Cancer

”This new drug has been shown to kill cancer cells.”

Ah, yes, one of my favorite topics. Stuff that kills cancer. Nowadays, everything seems to kill cancer. Everything but chemotherapy. But why do people think this? An example:

Metformin reduced the clonogenic survival of FSaII mouse fibrosarcoma cells and MCF-7 human breast cancer cells in dose and time-dependent manner as shown in Fig. 1. In FSaII cells (Fig. 1A), incubation with 1.0 mM metformin for 1 h reduced the clonogenic survival of cells to 65.1%, and incubation for 24 h or 48 h reduced the survival to 49.3% and 28.7%, respectively.

Okay, what does that mean? They incubated the cells with metformin. Incubating cells usually means putting them in a flask with the chemical they’re being incubated with. The flask is closed and then we wait.

When cells were cultured in the presence of metformin in the above mentioned studies, the size of resultant colonies and the cell density in the colonies were found to be reduced as compared with the colonies formed in regular medium.

Cultured in the presence of metformin, that means they let a cell line grow with metformin present. Still only a petri dish (basically, they might be using a different container. Mammalian cells are annoying to work with).

And what is their conclusion?

Nevertheless, our results clearly indicated for the first time that metformin is potentially effective to enhance the efficacy of radiotherapy.

Note the key word potentially. But wait, how could anyone twist this into “Metformin kills cancer”? Well, look at what their caption looks like:

Metformin kills and radiosensitizes cancer cells and preferentially kills cancer stem cells

Take a journalist who needs a great headline or someone who doesn’t actually read the whole article and boom. Metformin kills cancer.

So if you read that scientists discovered some great new way of killing cancer, you should ask: How did they test it? Only on cell lines or on actually living humans? And how many humans did they test? What were the actual results?

Don’t believe something just because the headline seems to imply a specific result.

We must all understand one thing, killing cancer cell on petri dish, doesn't reflect the same could happen on animals or human. Inside a living organism, a drug may act very differently.

A chemical maybe potent cancer killing agent, but may have systemic side effect on the patient.

bang bang bang!! right on spot lol

I would claim that setting the person on fire will kill their cancer as well.

Following your earlier two recommendations to test my claim, I'm pretty sure that the rate at which it works is statistically significant, but I don't think it's been peer-reviewed yet.

I peer reviewed it and repeated the experiment. It works but the mortality rate is way too high.

Hi @suesa indeed this is a nice post on the point of understanding research on X-Kills canser perhaps i must agree that X-Kills can cure canser if research is done properly and moreover instead of relying on chemotherapy alone for canser treatment since is good to try other alternatives, lastly @suesa this was a good post i really enjoyed it for sure keep posting such good content stuff here on Steemit.

Papers covering efficacy of metformin in treating cancer cells have been coming out for a while already. While you are absolutely right, to be fair in this particular case, the preclinical results were deemed convincing enough to start a number of clinical trials on metformin in treatment of breast cancer.
So far, no results are to be found published...
Only future will tell if the sloppy journalists were making false promises!

Yeah, I needed an example for my post, not making any statement about the actual effectiveness of the drug here :)

Note that a gun can kill cancer, fire can kill cancer, deadly chemicals can kill cancer... literally anything can "kill cancer."

The point is to kill cancer without harming the host (rest of the human body).

Thank you for being a sensible voice. I find it so insensitive that people out there are claiming this and that can cure cancer completely and that there's a pharma conspiracy hiding it.

Excellent post. We constantly receive information in the mode of "broken telephone". The fundamental points are in the nuances, which did not reach us, if we rely only on media, and do not study the primary sources. This applies not only to medicine and to science in General...

"Scientists have found a cure for cancer! NASA discovered a planet with organic life! Microsoft has created a quantum computer!"

But as you rightly pointed out, the key words are: potentially + theoretically and hypothetically

I'm not an expert in the medical field. However, as a student of Mass Communications, I can confidently say how todays journalists (not all), do yellow journalism to spice up things and get more response from the audience. The common majority of laymen falls prey to such journalism and starts believing it to be true and this is how rumors become 'facts' when they pass on this information to their dear and near ones. It's a blessing that we're living in an age of IT and information. However, this blessing becomes curse when people starts sharing lies/fake info with just a click of button.

@suesa, Thanks for an awesome article that discloses the true faces of fake journalists. It's a guideline for Steemit authors as well. Good job to keep the Steemit community clean.

Respect.

Steem On!

Cancer is getting shier by the day.
The last thing I heard was the Syrosingopine synergic effect with metformin (Diabetes, cancer, hypertension treatment combo breaker)
Pre-clinical trials have been promising so far, though (especially the in-vitro and in vivo animal studies in lung tissue).

Retrospective studies show improvement in survival, but they can also show the contrary, depending on who pays them.

Great works, I wish you success

The Island of Pythagoras

Great Sharing :)

I would like to add my view about cancer here.Btw Glad to know about this things you have provided.

See cancerous cells are completely different from other cells of our body. The way they metabolize and creates energy for surviving and for replication is unique. Normal cells are used to Oxygen whereas cancerous cells prefer glucose i.e sugar. Oxygen provides far less fuel for cancer cells than glucose (only 2 energy molecules instead of 36 with sugar). Therefore, filling your body with more oxygen is a smart and safe method to fight cancer.

Stay healthy :)

I can't even begin to tell you how wrong this is...

Nh you can provide me the truth then. I don't mind.
I just provided the facts i knew. Where can you deny my point that's what I want to know!

All (human) cells feed on glucose (or fatty acids or amino acids, depending on what's available). For thia to work, they need oxygen (although there are ways to gain energy without oxygen too). That's true for cancer and normal cells.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cellular_respiration

Additionally, not every cancer works the same way. Different mutations cause different cancers. That's why it's nearly impossible to find one single cure. And no, cancer cells are not "completely different" than normal cells. They're usually just don't die as easily and multiply a lot.

Change in the alteration of their genetic sequence is different for different cancers. I admit. But they multiply at a uncontrolled rate of growth which is ovbiously different from 'normal cells'

Different, but not "completely different" as you stated above. In fact, many mutations are just a single switched base. Not much of a difference and not enough to change its whole metabolism.

Oh okay! But I didnot stressed too much on 'completely'. Just added my view. May be I should have to care on my every words now!

Since I am a student and a learner here so Forgive me :)

Dude.
What?!?

Words mean things. By using words like Facts and Completely you are drawing a conversational line in the sand.

Just own up and say that they're your Beliefs . It won't automatically make them right, but it will be accurate.

Out of interest, where have you learned this? :D

Doesnot make a point if you don't have the interest. Well I don't want to waste your time :)

I didn't say "I'm not interested" or anything like that.

"Out of interest" points out that it's not strictly about the topic, but I'm asking because I'm interested.

See it's regarding the topic. I am not talking about video games here.
And i learnt this in my classes as I am interested in medical science :)

Great post @suesa. Some drug must be produced to cure cancer. One of my relative just passed away due to blood cancer. She was undergoing chemotherapy for past 06 months. But chemotherapy also kills healthy cells. I just heard that Cannabis oil has good results to cure cancer.

Still pretty early in the research to say for sure on that one. It does help with appetite during chemo though......for many people.

OK, so I maybe know six people that swear by it. All those facebook posts can't possibly be exaggerating.

(For real though, more research needs to be done, what we have right now is some very media friendly correlations.)

I think people in this situation would try everything, maybe it gives them hope if chemotherapy didn't help them! But you're right - Catchy headlines are the only reason why people get very interested in an article/topic :)

i love science and good work..!😍

Dude, you're absolutely killing it. That's all I have to say.
Steem on!

I am not a scientist. I think a blind study on type 2 diabetes people should be done before anyone believes anything out of the mouth of a drug company. What is the cancer rate among Type 2 diabetes, and the general population. What is the cancer rate between people with type 2 diabetes using Metformin, and those that do not? And doctors need to stop giving high blood pressure pills to type 2 diabetes people, unless they emphatically warn their patient that those pills may damage your kidneys, and let the type 2 diabetes person know how many of them suffer kidney problems.

thanx for ur post

Great article thanks for sharing!

@suesa
You are really wonderful I wish to be like him in the future

Like who

Woooo...!!!!! @suraj

Why are you tagging yourself

@suesa I'd love an article by you telling us why ALS can't be cured today. My dad died from it. It's such a dreadful disease. It's worse than cancer in the sense that it's literally a death sentence.

Developing cures is not easy, especially with diseases like ALS. Research continues and I hope we'll be able to cure it one day.

I'm sorry about your dad.

We all do.

Sorry to hear about your pop. I lost mine back in '05 from pneumonia he caught in the hospital.

Sorry to hear that too man

There is a lot of fake news out there, especially the need for big headlines to draw readers. They are just trying to bait more readers and attention.

Nice post suesa...
Its usually one thing to develop a probable cure and another to find an appropriate test subject whether with a cultured approach or a real life subject. Results gained from cultures may bounce if used on actual life form maybe due to difference in ratios etc hence my suggestion on the use of induced subjects of possibly lower life forms with closely related human features instead of cultures. I believe it will help bring us closer to desired results.
I also suggest that certain information should be kept away from the media guys. They have a way of spiking/spicing reports hence causing avoidable situations and criticisms
I hope this is helpful

Sadly, the news agencies have heard about PubMed. There's no stopping them now.

interesting post

wow ,,
this information is very useful for everyone, especially for cancer patients,
and I will update your articles to everyone, especially to my family, and I will invite steam users to see your info,

With all the brilliant minds walking the planet, it seems to me if they really wanted to cure cancer, they would have already. So, every now and then, they pop out a new drug or treatment that "may" work, just to keep up appearances. Just an opinion...

You should visit a conference with focus on cancer where top-notch scientists present their research. You would be confirmed in your statement that there are brilliant minds out there, but you would also have to acknowledge that the reality of the biology underlying (advanced) cancer is immensely complex and seemingly resistant to various really smart approaches.

Maybe. Then again, cancer is a complex thing, there doesn't exist only just one. And for many cancers there are successful treatments. My mom herself survived one and she feels great now.

Medical research is complicated, expensive and takes time. Until a single drug is approved 10 years can pass (from first experiment to being sold commercially).

I'm not denying that there is a good portion of corruption in the pharmaceutical industry but as someone aspiring to enter medical research myself I just can't believe that everything is already cured and just held back.

Thank you for your opinion, it's always important to talk about this. And I really understand your point of view, it can really feel like this sometimes.

Many of those brilliant minds descend into alcoholism and suicide. The smarter you are, the harder it gets to find others that can keep up with you mentally.

How many minds do we lose in the sea of our own mediocrity?

Really interesting post, @suesa. I hope that the cancer will be wiped out as soon as possible!

The field of cancer cure is getting broadened more and more. I remember reading a research report of a genetically engineered virus strain that fights cancer cells. Very soon, the world will be cancer-free. Don’t you think so?

I kind of doubt that it will happen very soon but I hope it.

Thank you I am following you, I hope you will also follow up vote me this honor to me

Agree with the good one post. Keep it up

Good post, many cancer patients are not saved due to knowledge about the drug is still lacking, thank you @suesa for sharing about drugs that can help cancer patients

Congratulations you did not read the post.

My sister got Leiomyosarcoma, a rare type of uterine cancer two years back.
They removed the tumor and gave chemo, radiation as prevention. It was a hell of pain.
I wish it were as easy as a pill!

I'm a Biohacker. My thought on cancer has always been to take the drugs and supplements that prevent cancer as opposed to taking them after I'm diagnosed. An ounce of prevention as they say.

Prevention is better than treatment. Sadly, random mutations can't always be prevented. Would be awesome if it'd be possible one day!

Thank you for sharing! Lookinf forward to seeing similar posts, especially on how to think critically and interpret scientific studies:).
