- Stay fit and have regular physical activity
- Regularly check your blood sugar and cholesterol levels
- Monitor blood pressure and reduce salt intake that promotes high blood pressure
- Healthy eating by maintaining adequate fluid intake (and adequate water intake)
- Monitor your weight
- Do not smoke
- Do not consume over-the-counter medications on a regular basis (especially non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, which can lead to functional renal failure in the long term)
- If you have one or more risk factors (diabetes, high blood pressure, family history), have your kidney function check
