Chapter two

in sciencefiction •  6 years ago

I tried to get dressed but I was too weak, my muscles didn't respond to the idea of movement very well. Eventually I put on some pants too big for me, some shirt and a pair of sneakers. When I went outside the apartment, I saw the eviction notice in every single one of the doors of the compound, then I noticed something else. There was a smell in the building, it was almost sweet, kind of like iron in the air. I tried to locate the source of the smell but I couldn't see much. Then I saw the stains on the floor. Blood stains of something dragged and carried around until it was, eventually, thrown off the balcony. I looked down from the place where the stains stopped, and saw hundreds of bodies on the first floor of the building. Piles and piles of corpses, one on top of each other, without any consideration to the person that once was. I felt the terror, I felt the need to escape that place. I looked around to see if there was someone there alive besides me, and heard some noises on the top floor. I went there, very slowly, very quietly, and saw a group of people that were the ones taking us out of our apartments and shooting at us in the forehead. Without mercy, without compassion. I mean, how could they do something like that without feel remorse???

I felt sick and wanted to throw up. I ran towards my apartment again, thinking about what I've seen and wondering how much time will it take them to reach my apartment. I had to get out of there. I grabbed a backpack I had from when I was in college and threw some water bottles in it. My identification and my daughter's stuffed animal, that was the only thing I wasn't going to leave. I reached my apartment door and looked through the peep hole. I opened the door very carefully and heard some steps coming towards me, but then the steps stopped. I looked around and saw someone in the alley but he wasn't looking at my direction, so I ran away from him and tried to reach the stairs. That's when things went wrong.
