Hemoglobin Crystals (#Sciencepic)

in sciencepic •  7 years ago  (edited)

What you see here are hemoglobin crystals. When biologists want to know the three dimensional structure of a protein, they try to get it to form a regular crystal lattice. The resulting crystal is then shot with x-rays and the resulting pattern can be used to recreate the structure of the protein. The whole procedure is very tricky and it can take several months until the right chemical solution is found that makes the perfect crystal possible.

It would be cool if these posts included a few links for further related reading on the subject matter. The project is very interesting nonetheless, I'm looking forward to seeing more material like this on Steemit.

What do you call the scary demons hiding within blood cells?

HEMOGOBLINS!

Nice one there @mobbs, lol

Really nice photograph! I had been looking at a crystal under a microscope with plane polarizer, and you may see even more color at different angel.
btw, I was also told that it might be really painful to grow a protein crystal, so some people are doing protein NMR instead to by pass the crystal.

Every technique has it's upsides and downsides but yes, growing those crystals is a real pain. This picture is one out of three that actually had measurable crystal. I had 50 samples.

that's interesting :D

very interesting

hey @suesa i've been following your work lately and you've been doing a really good job with your posts. You've gotten a lot of traction on steemit while being here for a short period of time. Keep it up! :D

I've also noticed that you get some votes from people that do not follow you. I've recently learned about projects like minnowsupport, randowhale and others. Are you using something similar to those projects to get votes? Please let me know, i am new to all of this and just wanna learn more. Maybe via chat or something if you wanna discuss that.

Your comment got a bit messed up

Idk what happened with the comment, i just edited it though.

Hey! Those projects are kind of everywhere and I mostly stumble across them because I'm very active in the chat. Usually, you need someone else to promote you because self-promotion is frowned upon in most cases.

Randowhale is something where you can kind of buy votes but I've never used it myself and don't know how it works.

So my advice would be to integrate yourself into the community, create good content and it will eventually work out :)
