Climate Science: Let the Data Speak

in sciences •  3 years ago  (edited)

Climate Intelligence (CLINTEL) is an independent foundation that operates in the fields of climate change and climate policy. CLINTEL was founded in 2019 by emeritus professor of geophysics Guus Berkhout and science journalist Marcel Crok. CLINTEL's main objective is to generate knowledge and understanding of the causes and effects of climate change as well as the effects of climate policy.

Climate Intelligence (CLINTEL)

I have previously addressed a problem with climate models. Still, aside from noting that the average world temperatures are less than predicted, I haven't had anything constructive to add to the topic. In this interview of Guus Berkhout, he expands upon the idea of how temperature should be represented. He describes how the data needs to be "unfolded." The average temperature at the equator varies at each longitude, and the average temperature at a specific longitude varies at each latitude. If we compared the temperature along a line through Europe and Africa, it would differ from a line drawn through the Pacific. Comparing the average temperature along the equator will vary from the average temperature at 50 degrees latitude North. We can unfold the data to see what the actual temperature is at a single recording station, so a good model should be able to predict the temperatures at that recording station in the future.

I also learned about the Magna Charta Universitatum. It was established in 1998 and incorporated in 2000. The basic premise of the charter was a process to make standards comparable among the university signatories. One of the truths in science is that it takes dissenting voices to achieve progress. It requires people who are "skeptics" to question established beliefs. This principle of allowing rational debate on alternative views has been undermined because of government and corporate funding being used as a weapon against intellectual freedom.
