The acts of the apostles tell us about the conversion to the Christian faith of the first pagan, after the excommunication of Simon Magus, this pagan tells us the Bible was an Ethiopian who was baptized by Philip, not the apostle but the deacon. This fact is of utmost importance because Armenia and Ethiopia were the first countries to adopt the Christian faith. This conversion has a special meaning because this story reminds us of the visit of the Queen of Sheba to Solomon, who probably had a son in common, Menelik I, king of Ethiopia.
From this fact the conversion of the first pagans begins, and especially of Saul who was a Jew of Roman citizenship and who would later be called Paul.
The spirit, the sacred scriptures tell us, sent Philip to the road that connects Jerusalem with Gaza and there he saw a chariot where the Ethiopian who was an official of the queen of his country was, it is then that a dialogue between Philip and the Ethiopian begins:
"´Do you understand what you are reading?´ Philip asked.
´How can I,´ he said, ´unless someone explains it to me?´ So he invited Philip to come up and sit with him.
This is the passage of Scripture the eunuch was reading:
´He was led like a sheep to the slaughter,
and as a lamb before its shearer is silent,
so he did not open his mouth.
In his humiliation he was deprived of justice.
Who can speak of his descendants?
For his life was taken from the earth.´
The eunuch asked Philip, ´Tell me, please, who is the prophet talking about, himself or someone else?´ Then began with that very passage of Scripture and told him the good news about Jesus." Acts 8:30-35.
After this conversation, the Ethiopian official accepted Jesus as savior and was baptized in a place where there was water, after which the Bible tells us that Philip was taken away by the spirit.
