NOMADIC: Ajala's Lamentations
Now the day is over, the crickets chirping and clinking
It is a full moon but the skies are void of stars
Clearly, the Galaxies share in our pain
The pain of thousands of us with a common curse
An overdose of that curse they termed melanin
As we sojourn with hopes of a better tomorrow
That may never be; as the curse binds us to a condemnation of servitude
To be betrayed by our own brothers and sold for pennies
From the days of our ancestors, unsevered ties with slavery
Only difference is that they were captured but we?
We walked right in, As though claiming our inheritance
With the consolation that we search for that which was never lost
That which belong to us but was never ours,
Deceitfully claimed by the ones who had promised better

How can we be blamed for choosing to find our way?

As the morning slowly returns and I continue my sojourn,
the clanging chains reminding me of my predicament
I think of Maami and Aduke. Oh! How beautiful she must be now
Does Maami still await on my promise to bring back the pot of gold?
Will her prayers guide me? Will I ever make it back home?
If that never happens, I pray the soil that soaks my sweats never forgets who I am.
My name is Ajala, and all I ever wanted was the grass on the other side...
