Since every gun grabber up to and including the POTUS has, at one point or another, told us both that the 2nd Amendment was written at the time of muskets and that our AR-15s aren't gonna stand up to tanks and fighter jets, we have to be reminded from time to time why this is bullshit.
First of all, repeating rifles did exist before the 2nd Amendment was drafted. In fact, for the first century after the Declaration of Independence, a lot of people brought their own weapons to the fight which were better than what the average infantry man had. Of course, the Framers were well aware of this. Despite what Biden said about cannons, yes, private citizens in these United States were always allowed to own cannons. We still are.
To say that the Framers couldn't imagine the kind of weapons that we have now is to falsely believe that we're more imaginative now than people were back then. We don't have blasters and phasers in real life; but, we imagined them.
Are our AR-15s gonna stand up to the most powerful military in the world? Well, it's a long shot. But, you're missing the damn point.
The 2nd Amendment was clearly written with the idea that the citizens would have the same legal access to weapons as agents of the state. We've just managed to butcher the Bill of Rights a lot over years.
Is an AR-15 gonna give us a fighting chance against our government? Well, I think we have a better chance with AR-15s than we would with muskets.
If there's one thing that we should have learned from the multiple military quagmires that we've had during my lifetime, it's that fighting people on their home turf is hard. If the government turns on us, they'll be fighting us on our own turf.
What's more is that the Democrat position on this makes the assumption that, if the government told the military to aim its guns at the American people, that they'd have the support of the military.
Given how much family and how many friends I have either in the military or retired from the military, I don't believe that. I think a great many people in the military would see that something's wrong and take up arms with the people.
