The ways of God are mysterious and they are beyond the reason of man, as happened to Job who tried with his wisdom to understand the providence of God; the Psalm 25 is dedicated to understanding especially one of these ways which is the fear of God; to understand the gift of fear of God is to understand the mysteries of the Bible. At Sinai, God established an alliance with the people of Israel, and through this pact, God gave Moses the Law; but in order not to be a dead letter, the Law needs the fear of God, that is, it needs hearts that are well predisposed to receive the instruction, this is why the fear of God is the most important spiritual gift in the old testament: "Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man", Ecclesiastes 12:13. The fear of God is constancy, firmness, devotion, equanimity, stability.
All the prophets remind us that when the chosen people lost their way to their God, it was because first of all, they hardened their hearts: "But they refused to pay attention: stubbornly they turned their backs and covered their ears" Zechariah 7:11.
The Lord rewards those who love him and seek his word, thus fulfilling the pact, like the beatitudes of Jesus (Matthew 5:5), the Psalm 25 explains to us that the prize of the fear of God is the safe life, that is, inherit the land:
"Who is the man who fears the LORD?
He will show him the way he should choose.
He will live a good life,
and his descendants will inherit the land" Psalm 25:12-13.
The Psalm 25 also explains that God reveals his mysteries to those who are devoted to him, such as the prophets, because the fear of God is progressive, gradual, and edifying; the spiritual gift of fear of the Lord is the path to Gnosis (inner enlightenment), immortality and eternal life:
"The secret counsel of the LORD
is for those who fear Him,
and He reveals His covenant to them" Psam 25:14.
Those who fear the Lord have the blessing of his spiritual guidance and thus avoid the traps of their enemies:
"My eyes are always on the LORD,
for He will pull my feet out of the net" Psalm 25:15.
Psalm 25 invites us to reflect on the mystery of God.
