Go to a porn site, get a virus — right?

in security •  7 years ago

When visiting high-risk websites, such as those hosting adult content, it's not uncommon to encounter ads. While advertisements are usually harmless, the ones appearing on risky websites can be quite dangerous. They could lead to the installation of questionable programs or even outright malware. Thus, users are often warned to not engage with any ads while visiting pornographic, gambling or similar websites. However, some malicious advertisements are concealed to look like legitimate alerts about necessary updates or programs.

Quite often, the promise of celebrity pornographic videos and images is used to make users install something. Looking for an adult video of a particular celebrity can lead to fake adult websites hosting malware. Users would be asked to install some kind of update or program in order to view the video. And without much thought, many users do install the offered programs, unknowingly infecting their computers with malware. This is a classic method which can result in some pretty serious infections. All of these 'you need to install something to play a video' alerts will always be fake, so engaging with them is putting the computer at risk. The best course of action when encountering such alerts is to close the tab or the browser.

Dangers behind Fake ads

The method of using pop-up ads and error windows to trick people into malicious or useless software is not new. Pop-up ads, banners or suspicious extensions on your browser are frustrating, but this just one side when discussing PUPs. Some of these extensions can contain bitcoin-mining features to mine cryptocurrency by using your computer's CPU resources.

Additionally, such apps can initiate data collection to share this data with third-party companies. PUPs and other adware programs can access:

  • IP addresses;
  • Geo-location;
  • Search queries;
  • Browser type and version;
  • Information about internet provider;
  • OS and version;
  • Most viewed sites.

One thing to keep in mind is that you should only download programs from official/legitimate sources, and never advertisements. This is a good way to protect your computer from junk, or dangerous programs.

Conclusion

The dangers you need to avoid on porn sites are not too different from those you might encounter anywhere else in cyberspace.

And that means the protection measures are the same:

•Install all operating system and browser updates promptly and only from official sources.
•Don’t click on suspicious links and don’t be tempted by banner ads.
•Use antivirus software, for example WiperSoft
