A few days back I was facing a few issues related to computer and internet security and it's a coincident I stumbled upon @kevinwong post https://steemit.com/internet/@kevinwong/how-to-survive-on-the-internet and learned great things. Afterwards I kept searching net and learned so many important things which keeps our computer safe and makes our net surfing experience smooth and more secure.
I'm going to share all this in this post. Before that I want to say this post is inspired by @kevinwong thank you so much :)
His post had eye opening facts and led me to search and read more and more. I figured out a few more things:
1. Firewall We must use computer firewall because it protects from intruders. Most of the people who surf net they don't have firewall installed in the mac or PC and they all think that there computer / laptop is safe, in fact I also used to think like this but after installing firewall I came across amazing thing:
Every once in a while someone was trying to access my computer and it was being blocked by firewall. If I hadn't had firewall that person might have access to my computer and you can imagine what could have happened. We keep the important documents, password, financial information on our computer by keeping that in mind that it's safe and only we have access to it but without firewall it's not safe.
There are many free firewalls which work best:
Private Eye [Mac]
Little Snitch [Mac]
Zone Alarm Free Firewall http://www.zonealarm.com/
Comodo Free Firewall https://www.comodo.com/home/internet-security/firewall.php
Note: Don't forget to update software and set the option to auto-update it's definitions.
2. Antivirus We also do need a good Antivirus to keep our computer virus free and now a days it's a must have. There are a few good free antivirus programs:
Avast www.avast.com
Quickheal
Avira
Note: Don't forget to update software and set the option to auto-update it's definitions.
3. Firefox I also found a few Firefox addons which are must have to protect our privacy and also for computer security:
Ghostery - it blocks web trackers so that companies like Facebook and Google can’t track your activity.
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/ghostery/
uMatrix - It's miny version of above addon but pretty straight forward.
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/umatrix
Blur - it block companies from collecting information about you
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/donottrackplus
All credit goes to @kevinwong as his post lead me to understand the concept better.
