According to UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), 45% of the global population lived in world’s cities in 1994. Today, over 60% of the global population lives in cities, and FAO estimates that it will rise to 65% by 2025. The rising urbanization is one of the key trends in global demographics shifts, and remains a major driver for changes in food supply, increase demand for organic, and healthy foods, and growing support for local farm produce. Moreover, the trend is dominant in some of the fastest growing food products markets including Asia, and Africa. The trend has already gripped the developed world, with FAO estimating that 84% of the population in developed countries will live in cities by 2025.
