Greece continues to tremble. Earthquakes in the Cyclades, off the islands of Santorini, Amorgos, Ios and Anafi, have not stopped repeating this Wednesday. Greece has already accumulated more than 1,200 earthquakes in recent days. A complex seismic swarm that suggests the possibility of a major earthquake in its territory.

The latest images of landslides on Red Beach, with rocks falling and forcing the beach to be closed to the public, have once again rung the alarm bells.

A seismic swarm has been occurring northeast of the island of Santorini, or Tera, in Greece for about a couple of weeks and has already produced more than 1,200 earthquakes tracked by the seismic network, more than 60 of which had a magnitude equal to or greater than 4.

Despite the concern, specialists point out that these tremors are not related to the island's volcano. For the time being, the scientists rule out the possibility of a volcanic origin of this seismic swarm and associate it with the activity of the faults in the area, which are the result of the convergence of the Eurasian and African plates.

“Since we cannot predict what will happen next, scientists have made a series of recommendations for the population to be protected, such as closing schools or avoiding large indoor crowds,” says geologist Nahúm Méndez, known on Twitter as A Geologist in Distress.
