Can Selenium and Coq10 Combo Supplements Reduce Heart Disease Related Deaths?

Based on statistical findings, cardiovascular disease causes about 17 million deaths every year in the developed countries. A recent, Swedish study, which was published on the International Journal of Cardiology, revealed that taking CoQ10 and selenium supplements can reduce the number of deaths caused by this condition by about up to 50%. This may be attributed to the many benefits offered by the two supplements, including:

• Improved heart function
• Reduced hospital stays following surgeries
• A one-year protection after taking the supplements

Other studies on these supplements have revealed that they can also protect body tissues against oxidative stress.

Health Benefits Associated With Selenium and Coq10 Supplements

Studies on the effectiveness of these two supplements in combating deaths related to heart disease show that using the two supplements can actually reduce the chances of dying from heart disease. One such study was carried out on 443 healthy people, aged between 70 and 80 years, over a period of five years. Half of the subjects were given 200mg of selenium and CoQ10 supplements while the other half received placebos for five years. By the end of the five years, 12.6% of the subjects taking placebos had died of cardiovascular disease. However, only 5.9% of the subjects taking the supplements had died of this condition.

In addition to reducing the number of heart disease related deaths, researchers conducting this study discovered that taking the two supplements can also lower biomarker NT-proBNP levels, which often indicates heart failure. The researchers from Spiqy.com also discovered that selenium and CoQ10 continued offering such heath benefits for up to 10 years, after the subjects had stopped using the supplements.

How Do the Supplements Work?

Selenium is a mineral while CoQ10 is an antioxidant. Once introduced into the body, Selenium enhances the functioning of certain enzymes, most of which have antioxidant effects on free radicals in the body. CoQ10, on the other hand, protects the exterior mitochondrion membrane in sick cells; thus making such mitochondria more efficient. The two supplements also reduce oxidative stress, which has been proven to speed up the aging process and worsen chronic diseases.

Sources of Selenium and CoQ10

Some the good sources of CoQ10 today include whole grains, liver, and tuna. Selenium may be derived from brewer's yeast, wheat germ, sunflower seeds, Brazil nuts, and shellfish. With regards to extending people’s lives and improving the quality of life for aging people, researchers found CoQ10 and selenium to be highly effective supplements, when administered together. In this regard, the two supplements may be used to lower the chances of dying of cardiovascular diseases.cardiovascular.jpg
