How to Break Bad Habits - Is it Possible?

in self-improvement •  7 years ago

If one of your bad habits is smoking then either it's because of peer pressure, you just wanted to fit in or you tried it and now you are stuck with it. If, however, it's because you think it's a stress reliever and you think that there's no either way to relax then try meditation. It works wonders!

Here's the playlist showing you everything about Vipassana Meditation.

"You have bad habits, but it's impossible to break them."

Everything seems to be so difficult if you don't have the foundation meaning you don't know how it works. In this case, you also need to know how habits are formed in order to break them.

Habits are formed:

  1. Cue
  2. Routine
  3. Reward
    (4. Craving)

If you want to have further insights into this then I would recommend the book: The power of Habit:

How to break the habit is by
CHANGING/REPLACING THE ROUTINE!

What you need as a requirement is:

  1. Visualization (02:37)
  2. Negative Reinforcement (04:05)
  3. Time Interval Experiment (04:51)

What is holding you back is...

  1. The Law of Attraction (06:14)
  2. Your Prefontal Cortex shuts down when you are stressed out (07:15)

Ultimate Solution for breaking habits is AWARENESS!

Don't be afraid that it might be hard because it might be, but you HAVE TO take the first step.

The ultimate cure (to everything) is knowing what your REALLY need (as I happen to discuss in my latest post), which comes down to mindfulness, awareness, basically being fully awake (you can call it enlightenment if you prefer, but let's keep it basic for now). In the meantime....addiction is complex.

Just woke up to a BBCWorld report on gambling, and it made me ask what comes first: the chips, the money, the desire, the addiction? As you eloquently suggest, the latter, of course. The next question is, though, why are we not supporting healing as a human race but facilitating negatives? The game-play (world economy= you have chicken-me have shells=survival, eating, inner-outer world business affairs of the body, turned into bridge-building of a higher order) is dominant. We HAVE to keep the game alive. But it comes at a cost of the insular individual. It's the turnside of benefitting the individual....which is the point of this evolutionary period of individualisation (and free choice).

Good news is, you and me both know the solution to the downsides: Supportive Communities!

That is very insightful!! I appreciate your long comment, honestly! Always when I read such comments I'm like "daaaaaaamn!! This is awesome!!"

The truth is...awareness helps us much further in life. It helps us discover who we are, what we need, what we react to. It's amazing the first time I actually discovered this feeling, but sometimes it's challenging. I HAVE to meditate in the morning in order to "activate" the awareness.

Concerning your topic, it's very controversial...however, I agree with you to a certain degree because at the end there's only less wrong and less right. Despite that fact, my view might resemble to yours and that's why there are so many perceptions on this planet where one argues with the other, but at the end it's about what WE, YOU think to yourself what is morally right or wrong.

I'm getting philosophical here...sorry hahah

Anyway, thank you again for your long a** post haha

Winny out...for now ;)

You can't ever get too philosophical on me! Great that you are thinking along at a sincere level.

What do u think of vaping ? is it a better alternative compare to smoking ? My bro had a bad habit of smoking but he moved to vaping now which i believe is equally dangerous

The thing is, you need to inform yourself before making a decision. If he did that and he still wants to smoke then that is on him. If, however, he wants to quit then smoking vape isn't the choice because it isn't quitting. Or maybe he wants to quit, but he is taking things slowly. In that case, it's good, but eventually he will have to stop (if that is his choice)

Winny out...for now ;)
