Stoicism And Marcus Aurelius

This year I discovered the ideology and principles of Stoicism and how it can help you in life. At a very basic level, it tells us that we are not in control of most things, except our own feelings, beliefs, thoughts, perceptions and actions. We should concentrate on these aspects and things to reach or attain our goals and happiness in a practical and realistic way.

One of the most well-known Stoic's was Marcus Aurelius (121-180 AD). When I read the following quote or words by him, I was amazed that it still rings true and it makes sense to us even today, even though it was written all those years ago. It talks about the human condition: we all like to feel joy and comfort, but we have to rise or get out of our warm beds every day to work and get want we want - things don't come to us naturally!

We have to do the necessary things in life to achieve our goals and follow our dreams, life's not a warm comfortable bed, it's painful and uncomfortable at times, but that's part of life and living!:

“At dawn, when you have trouble getting out of bed, tell yourself: “I have to go to work - as a human being. What do I have to complain of, if I’m going to do what I was born for - the things I was brought into the world to do? Or is this what I was created for? To huddle under the blankets and stay warm?"

So you were born to feel "nice"? Instead of doing things and experiencing them? Don’t you see the plants, the birds, the ants and spiders and bees going about their individual tasks, putting the world in order, as best they can? And you’re not willing to do your job as a human being? Why aren’t you running to do what your nature demands?

You don’t love yourself enough. Or you’d love your nature too, and what it demands of you.”
