Hunter S. Thompson on Setting Your Goals

in selfhelp •  7 years ago

Have you ever tried to set a goal , then worked relentlessly towards your goal only to be disappointed once you reached it ? Or to set a goal and find that it stayed forever out of reach. Life is ever-changing. Everything is in flux. Isn't goalsetting a foolish endeavour.

The following letter is one of the most important and profound texts I have ever come across.

The mind-boggling thing is that the person that wrote this letter was 22 years old at the time. Most 22 year olds you would talk to today are babbling idiots. It just shows what extraordinary person this man was. We are of course talking about Hunter S. Thompson, most famous for a brand new style of journalism , gonzo , where fiction and non-fiction were intermingled. Hunter S. Thompson is also known for consuming ungodly amounts of narcotics when writing and he ended up committing suicide.

So, you might ask, why the hell should I take life advice from a junkie who shot himself in the face ? Well, I think that the genius of Hunter S. was that he saw the world for what it is. An extraordinary sensitive man that couldn't cope with how things are in this world. At 22 life hadn't gotten to him yet.

His advice is spot on. It's a response to his friend Hume, who had asked Hunter what he should do with his life. Read his immortal words right here :
