The Prison of Depression

Locked tight in a bind that you cannot see, cut off from words that you cannot hear, in exile to a place where you cannot feel love. You might not even know that you are in it. Perhaps you do know where you are but have no clue what to do about it.

You are in the Prison of Depression

The biggest obstacle to self-improvement is yourself

I write a lot about self-improvement. It’s a great goal to improve yourself and to improve your life. The world would change with more improved people in it. However, it is not possible to start this journey from a position of depression.

Usually, a depressed person will be unable to move from their position. Their position is a mental one. It is a state of mind where all the factors in their life have shut them off from good things and locked them down to just being. Some depressed people get so bad that they want to kill themselves. Suicide.

It’s not uncommon. I am not too sure exactly how many of the adult population has never had thoughts of committing suicide. All I do know is that anyone that I get to know really well will eventually open up and tell me that they went through a time that they considered it.

But let’s not get off track here. Depression and the will to live are in opposition to each other. Having a will to live is the same will that wishes to live well and to improve.

You are the master of your willpower. If you want to do it then you shall.

It’s simple – Depression will be in the way of your self-improvement.

Knowledge is the key to the prison cell

Taking proper notice of your own depression, as an outsider would, is the first step in addressing the situation. You now have the opportunity to reflect and consider why it is that you are feeling this way. Consider also how long it has been that you have felt this way.

My opinion is that if you cannot figure it out for yourself and feel better afterward, or if you have been feeling this way for a long time then get professional help. Spend the money and the time on giving yourself a bit of expert help and reap the rewards later.

If you have not been feeling too down for too long then perhaps you can help yourself. Realize what it is that is making you depressed and rationalize the problem.

I find that as a parent I have needed to solve a lot of little worries and fears from my kids. I feel that I have gained the introspection to do the same with my own worries and issues.

Using Patience as a tool to destroy Depression

By and large, the main factors that make and keep us depressed do not stand up to a lot of reason and problem-solving. Sometimes we even know the solution but it’s not always the prettiest and nicest outcome.

Whatever the source, we need to be patient with our thoughts. To find the real root of all our problems may take a bit of thinking and searching and is not always the first thing that we find.

Think of it as a complex knot. The more you pry and tug at the strings, the better the chance that you will find a weakness and unravel the knot.

Be patient and chip away at it slowly, consider all the factors that lead up to your feelings and try to find more meanings underneath. Even the ones that you are trying to hide from others and even yourself.

Remember – you CAN do it.

You are the best-qualified person for finding out what is making you depressed and making it go away. When you go to a professional, they are the experts that know a lot of things and know all the types of issues that there is. What they do is they lead you along a process and they listen a lot. They then use this information that you have given them to lead you along to a point of realization that will bring you out of depression.

I am not talking about people with chemical imbalances and chronic depression. That you will well know is something that can only be medicated.

But for the rest of us, our depression can be just as severe. At the same time, it can be worked on and it can be solved.

The only step there is to take is the step that allows you to follow with another.

Keep working on it.

Good to see you back again, It has been a while. Honestly the thing that always makes me feel better is working out. Seems to let me work the anger out.

Having a good workout is certainly going to make a difference because it will force a chemical change in your body.

Which honestly is a really good habit if you have it. Unfortunately, a lot of depressed people do not "feel" like doing any kind of exercise and need to be aware of that. People need to force themselves to get busy and THEN feel the benefits.

Haha, I saw that for sure. I didn't want to say anything about it though.

Very good article, VFF. My personal theory (as a total layman only) is that most of what we call "depression" is based upon either a legit chemical imbalance (which is a simple fix, if the person wants it) OR, a problem with relationships (or lack thereof.) I know few people who are happy and "lucky" in love who are depressed.

Just my two cents.

Yeah man. Much of it is just someone that is stuck with the situation. We are all generally educated enough to see it, or it is so common that most people have heard about it.

And yet, it is really difficult to see this about ourselves. Even at a point where people are stuck with inactivity they want to deny a state of depression.

Agreed. It's amazing what we can see in others that we refuse to see in ourselves.

This is exactly right. It is one of the biggest issues of our time is that we are generally very poor at looking inward and super good at looking outwards.

...A historically common human trait, I am sure. The Bible talks about people so willing to criticize the wood speck in another's eye, while ignoring the "mote" (large beam) in their own.

Oops!...lol...

When you consider all the things that make you depressed and go anywhere but there, where does it leave you?

In happiness. :P

Depression! One of the most underestimated pests of our time!
For us men it is even harder to coup with it and especially talk about it (openly) ...
