How do you Self Portrait!?

I give huge credit to those who take self portraits. It’s definitely an art and skill in itself.

I don’t often feel insecure when having my photo taken by others. I just look and smile and hope for the best and if I look funny I can generally laugh a little, knowing it’s a micro reflection of who I am. But for some reason taking photos of myself feels so strange? Yet videos, no problem!

My camera has a remote feature so I can take photos from a distance and line it all up on my phone. I thought I’d play around with it this morning. This was the best out of all the derpy pictures.

It’s a new world to me to have to think about angles and positioning and knowing I probably won’t get it right the first try. But there’s always beauty in challenge and I see this as just another outlet to play around in and hopefully a new way I can hone in on my creative eye. 👁 ✨

For me, it only happens by mistake, when I'm not aware the camera is switched on, and my mind is focused on something other than taking a picture.

I stand by my opinion that most people look best when they are not aware that the camera is capturing them.

I was taking "selfies" before they were a thing, when digital cameras first came out, almost 20 years ago. I still think its weird, even though its the new normal now.

Candid photos are always the best and I will always appreciate them the most. And I think even before cameras people were trying to capture themselves. I think about when people would sit for hours to have their portraits painted or use to inscribe drawings on cave walls. I think we are always trying to preserve moments but selfie culture is a whole other level. I have no qualms with capturing yourself in a moment but when it shifts into a space where people become fixated on taking the perfect selfie, I don't generally resonate with that. But each to their own. 😊

My thoughts EXACTLY!

Hahah this chick is a maniac! But if she's doing her and happy, good on her. It's definitely not what I'm about, but it doesn't really affect me either.

you live in Indonesia ?

No I wish! Just visiting. 😁

I only draw selfies and it's a bit of a cheat because I use 3d bases so I can always get the angle right ;D I haven't figured out how to do selfies yet, I only take stupid ones when I have to show my friends my new hair colour.

Were there derpy ones? This one just makes you look like a really nice, kind and fun person to be around.

I wish I could draw selfies! I mean sometimes I do practice drawing myself but it never really turns out looking like myself... yet. I'm working on my art skills. 😉 And stupid pictures are always the best especially when you have a cool new hair colour! It's more real, you know. Posing for this was weird for me cause it felt unnatural. Most of the derpy ones were of my feet cause I was swinging on the hammock but it wasn't really working out for me haha. And thank you, you are incredibly kind! 💛

I am so glad you are actively starting to consider playing around with self-portraiture! It will get so so much fun, I promise you! What I live the most about doing self portraits is that you have no limitations at all in regard of what a model would or would not be willing to di cause that’s you! So whatever idea you have you can make it happen! :) it is muuuch harder that taking photos of models or just in general other subjects but if you manage to realize the idea it is totally worth it! Looking forward to see what you come up with!! 🦋

Thanks @lostinhappiness. It's exciting to know I have more creative freedom to play around with photos although photography is all very new to me. Sometimes it's easier to have a subject kind of unaware and I can try and capture them in a creative way. But when it's myself, more planning goes into the story I want to create with the image. It should be fun to experiment with! 💗

Beautiful framing and expo and subject. I quite enjoy taking selfies. It’s funny, but it’s a thing my wife has always done - there are loads of photos of her as a teenager handholding her point and shoot film camera at arm’s length. But last week she sent me a selfie from her iPhone and commented that it’s the first time she’s ever done that. I think now it seems like a ‘thing’ and so she’s kinda unsubscribed from the idea.

Thanks Cams. 😊 I do agree that selfie culture is something much more prominent these days but people have always been trying to capture themselves. The example I used in a previous comment was that many years ago people would sit on end just to have their portrait painted. That to me is insane haha! Also I've looked back at so many old photos of my parents and they did the same thing, took photos of themselves but just before a word was created for it. In essences it's fun to capture yourself. I try not to take it too seriously but moving it from hand held to camera and tripod is definitely a new learning curb for me!

This is a great portrait @neeqi - essentially and technically too. I like how your legs and the tree's roots kind of mirror each other. The leaves on the right and the one s in the background on the right also create a nice depth.

None of that matters however, as your smile steals the show. 😊

Thanks for the feedback Ade! I was hoping to create depth with the layering of plants. And naturally when I feel awkward I just smile as big and bright as I can to hide. 😋

Beautiful as always my friend. I love the things you are sharing of late. Keep up the great work and hope you are having the time of your life!

I've been having a great time! Travel is something else and really does wonders to the soul. I've been in a much better space with myself and life of recent. I am glad you enjoy! 💜
