Google and Microsoft make it harder to access illegal contentsteemCreated with Sketch.

The ease with which we now have access to certain illegal content leads to its use is higher. These are exposed in the search engines and this is the door that many need to try them out.

This is an idea that comes from the Intellectual Property Office of the United Kingdom, and Google and Microsoft have just accepted and embraced it, starting to filter those contents and not presenting them in the search results.

This new code of practice has been accepted by the two largest Internet search engines, which are now restricting search results in the UK.

Sometimes people will search for something and they will end up unwittingly being taken to a pirated piece of content

What we want to ensure is that the results at the top of the search engines are the genuine ones

The idea of this group is to combat online piracy and the sharing of unauthorized content, reducing the visibility that these websites have on the Internet. When a movie or other content is searched on Google or Bing the most relevant results are going to be legal offers that will revert to content creators.

According to Eddy Leviten, Director General of the Alliance for Intellectual Property, the high visibility of these illegal content in search engines may lead users to opt for these proposals.

By not making them disappear directly, or blocking the access to the websites and their content, they prefer that the presentation of the results of the researches relegate them to the background, by not making them visible to Internet users, so that way they are not tempted to visit them.

The measure is, for the time being, limited to the United Kingdom by the entities that promote and monitor its implementation, but may soon be extended to other countries or even, as in previous situations, the search engines will end up being Forced to extend them because of internal problems.

These new measures are part of a wider code of practice and will be put into practice later this year. The idea is also to streamline the process of closing websites that share illegal content, streamlining the process between authorities and ISP’s, in the image of what already happens in our country.
