a nivel mundial hay mas 3000 especies-> se reportan 5 millones de accidentes al año de los cuales aproximadamente 2.5 millones son por serpientes venenosas
un accidente ofidio por definición es donde una serpiente muerde e inocula en el organismo de la victimas sustancias toxicas las cuales lesionan los tejidos y causan un cuadro clínico característico, provocando alteraciones fisiopatológicas locales o sistemáticas.
En Colombia los accidentes ofidicos se consideran un problema de salud publica por lo cual deben ser reportados al SIVIGILA desde el año 2004.
En Colombia en el 90% de estos accidentes se ven envueltos hombres en edad productiva (15-45 años de edad) sobretodo en extremidades inferiores, por lo cual se consideran una enfermedad ocupacional.
