Having sex during her period is a tricky thing because it’s not quite like having sex on a normal day. There are some benefits to having sex on her period, though. If she experiences cramps, then sex can alleviate some of the pain with the feel-good hormones like endorphins that it releases. You also won’t need any lube because the blood acts as a natural lubricant. And good for you, this a time when she’s really aroused! So if you can convince your partner to get on board with you, then let’s move on to how it’s done.
Towels and napkins

Get some thick towels to spread beneath her and lots of tissue napkins ready for easy access. This is to make sure you don’t get your bed messy, especially if you have clean white sheets and the tissues are for you to quickly clean up once you’re done. It won’t get too messy if you know what you’re doing.

1. Sex in the shower or tub

With having sex in your shower or bathtub, cleaning up becomes all the easier for you and your partner. If you can fit two people in your shower or tub, then this might work for you. But please remember, it is important to always take a shower and clean up well soon after having sex to avoid contracting UTIs and other such preventable infections.

2. Choose her lighter days

It’s guaranteed that period sex still has a lot of chance of getting messy than regular sex. So if you know when her lighter days of bleeding are, keep your clothes on till then!

3. Heed her discomfort

Often, periods is accompanied by the aching of the lower back, severe cramps in the lower abdomen and other things that can make sex really difficult for her. Thus, it’s best to allow her cramps and any other discomfort she may have to subside before going at it. Another important thing you should know is that the cervix changes positions slightly during the menstrual cycle and during her period, it tends to hang lower than usual and be more sensitive, which means sex could probably hurt her if it’s too rough.

Dear women, please make sure you communicate with your partner if you’re in pain!

4. The Missionary

While there’s no best sex position for period sex, missionary is the most recommended one to do it in due to simple laws of physics - when lying down on her back, gravity has less chance of making the blood flow out, thus making it less messy. See? That’s another reason women love this position!

5. Always use a condom

While the chances are really low, women can still get pregnant during their menstrual periods. Sometimes if you have sex on the last day of her period, and she ovulates soon enough, the sperm which can survive for about 72 hours in her body can still get her pregnant. A few women even ovulate while their period is on, making their chances of pregnancy higher if you don’t use protection. Remember that her periods will not protect either of you from STDs and that at this time, she’s actually more susceptible to infections. Moreover, a latex condom even makes cleaning up much easier for the man.

Honestly, I don’t see a reason you would want to forego the condom here!

6. Use a soft cup or a menstrual cup

Obviously, oral sex is out the window on her period (unless you’re a vampire) but if you wish to get handsy without getting messy, have her use a menstrual cup or a soft cup. These are designed to be fit over the cervical opening and collect the blood for a few hours, making it really useful. A soft cup is also more flexible and thus, should be what you use during penetrative sex. However, keep in mind that they don’t act as contraceptive methods so you will still need to use a condom.

7. Don't use tampons during penetrative sex

Since the tampon and the penis go through the same opening, there’s a chance of her experiencing too much pain during sex. More dangerous is the fact that the tampon may get pushed into her vagina and be difficult to remove without medical help. So do the smart thing and relinquish the tampon during penetrative sex.

There’s absolutely nothing to be grossed out about sex on her period because it’s as natural as anything else that happens in the body. So if you’re up for it, there’s no harm in giving it a try!
