Hello great steemians...
Missed everyone you, following this series...and I must apologise for being away for the past 3 days. The reason for my less activity here is due to a contest thrown up for minnows by @aggroed and in which myself @eurogee and my friend @smyle were contenders.
And you know what?! 😨
We - @eurogee and @smyle - won the contest and were delegated 250SP each by @aggroed! I think I will have to make a post on this very soon.
On the ongoing series, however...in the Chapter 4 Part 1, we learnt how to predict ovulation using Monthly Calendar Recording and Basal Body Temperature (BBT). In this Part 2 of Chapter 4, we will learn how to predict ovulation using cervical mucus analysis and cervical position monitoring.
CHAPTER 4 -- PART 2
CERVICAL MUCUS ANALYSIS
The presence and tactile consistency of a woman's cervical fluid undergoes a number of changes during her menstrual cycle. By observing changes in cervical fluid, a woman can predict ovulation - her most fertile time for conceiving a baby.
One of the purposes of cervical mucus - during the fertile period - is to sustain sperm in a healthy medium, to allow sperm to move freely through the cervix. Logically, there will be an increase in the cervical mucus at ovulation, as well as a change in the texture - the mucus becoming more pliable, 'stretchable. '
With clean fingers or toilet paper you may examine your cervical fluid. Make this a part of your daily fertility charting routine (ie ovulation prediction).
Below, you will find an overview of changes that will take place in your cervical fluid throughout your cycle.
Pre-ovulation
After your period, there is typically a feeling of dryness. There may be no visible cervical mucus at all. As your cycle progresses and more mucus appear, it may be whitish, yellow, cloudy, and sticky (tacky) to the touch. This sign naturally means the odds of conceiving are low.
Approaching Ovulation
As you near your ovulation date, your cervical fluids (mucus) will increase in volume and moistness or stickiness, as well as whitish or creamy appearance. This means you're getting closer to your ovulation. Intercourse timed under this phase is most likely to result in a girl. The details of why this is so are treated in Chapter 5.
During ovulation
At ovulation, the quantity and quality of cervical mucus will increase and the consistency will be like 'egg-white.' Instead of opaque, the cervical mucus may be semi-transparent. The feel of the cervical mucus will be more slippery and 'stretchy'. This is your fertile window of the month to conceive! And also represent the best opportunity to time intercourse for a possible baby boy conception. Details of this are taken care of in Chapter 5.
Post (after) ovulation
After ovulation, the slippery, stretchy aspect of the cervical fluids will lessen and the cervical mucus will again become tacky. Dryness may follow as the progesterone levels rise. Sexual relationship around this phase may result in a girl. This will be treated in the next chapter.
NB: after ovulation it is normal to have some dry, sticky or creamy mucus, and some women have watery mucus or a little egg-white again right before their menses begins.
Cervical Position Monitoring
In determining ovulation, monitoring cervical position ( the lower part of the uterus) is another key fertility sign. As with the cervical mucus, the location and the 'feel' of cervix will display measurable changes during your cycle. When you monitor your cervical mucus, also check your cervical position, asking yourself...
- is the position of the cervix low (easy to reach) or high (less easy to reach)?
- Does the cervix feel relatively soft or hard?
- Does the opening of the cervix feel relatively open or closed?
- Is the cervix dry to the touch - or relatively moist or very moist?
Of course, the answers to these questions are relative to yourself (so it may take a month or two to learn your body's fertility benchmarks).
First, wash your hands very well. It is vital you don't introduce any kind of infection into your reproductive system (if you're dealing with a yeast infection or any other kind of vaginal infection, you shouldn't check your cervix until the infection is cleared up).
If you think of your vagina as a hallway, your cervix is the other at the very end. While your vagina has a sort of spongy feel that gives way easily to pressure, the cervix is like a firm, round dimple. Some say it feels like the tip of your nose when you're not fertile and like the firmness of your lips when you're fertile - this is what you're feeling for.

to ovulation

Before Ovulation
here, the cervix will feel firm (like touching your nose) and it will be dry (due to the absence of cervival mucus). The position of the cervix will be low and you should have no trouble locating it. If you touch the entrance to the cervix, it will feel closed.

>
Approaching Ovulation
Here, the cervix will become soft and will moisten to create a fertile environment for sperm. The entrance of the cervix will open and start to lift. At the highest point, the cervix may be a bit difficult to reach and the entrance of cervix will increase in size. The feel of your cervix will be softer - like touching your lip. At this point, you're at your most fertile time - and cervical mucus should also be abundant and fertile.
After Ovulation
After ovulation, the cervix will again firm up and the opening to the cervix will begin to close up. The position of the cervix will lower and will be more accessible to the touch. However, if your cervix always feel slightly open, don't worry, especially if you have ever given birth (that can include a miscarriage ), your cervix may never fully close.

>
As ovulation approaches, you'll still be able to notice the height and softness changes of the cervix, though. Don't check your cervix position during or after sex. Your cervix always moves around according to your level of sexual arousal, regardless of ovulation.
Monitoring cervical mucus and cervical positions are great ways to predict ovulation naturally.
And this brings us to the end of Chapter 4 Part 2. Tomorrow or next, we will treat the last part of this chapter.
