Today, we have come to the real deal - the modified Shettles strategy. Please be attentive here. Whether you will succeed or fail in your bid to influence the sex of your future baby will depend on how correctly you work with the recipes here and those of chapter 4. Okay.

CHAPTER 5 Part 1

The Modified Shettles Strategy

The modified version of the Shettles Method has gender diet, supplements and Douching, in addition to other variable which form the backbone of Shettles postulations, as its gender swaying factors. For enhanced clarity, however, we will go through the crux of the original Shettles Method in this chapter without dwelling much on other ancillary theses.

The logic behind Shettles hypothesis is based on the fact that since Y and X chromosome sperm exhibit different characteristics, then under different biochemical circumstances - basic (alkaline) or acidic - either Y or X chromosome sperm will be more likely to fertilize the egg.

At this point, it is important to briefly review Chapter 3 for you to have a good grasp of the Shettles Method.

The X chromosome sperm are said to:

1. Be slower than Y chromosome sperm

1. Be better able to withstand the acidic cervical environment before fertile cervical fluid is produced.

Based on these premises, according to Shettles, you can time intercourse, choose a sexual position that favors the conception of your preferred sex and influence the reproductive environment to increase the likelihood of conceiving your preferred sex.

Shettles Method For Boys

The Shettles Method for boys attempts to time intercourse to occur at the same time with the day of woman's ovulation. The idea behind this logic is that since Y chromosome sperm is light and swims faster than X Chromosome Sperm under alkaline environment. Then if left under the same vaginal gradient at ovulation...Y chromosome sperm will outpace and 'beat' X Chromosome Sperm to reach the egg first and therefore fertilizes it.

It also takes into account that Y chromosome sperm prefer a more alkaline environment, which is provided by the woman's 'peak fertile mucus' at ovulation as well as her vaginal secretions released during female orgasms. All these factors combine to make conditions favour Y sperm against X sperm.

As a broad overview, the original Shettles Method for having boys recommends:

1. Douching: this involves the use of a mildly alkaline douche on cervical wall to create alkaline environment just before intercourse. This is discussed in great detail in a later Chapter.

2. Orgasm: If a woman reaches an orgasm just before the man ejaculates or at the time of ejaculation, it increases the alkaline secretions in her vaginal environment as well as the uterus. As you already know, this alkaline environment favors Y chromosome sperm more than X counter part. Orgasm also causes rhythmic contractions of the wall of uterus and fallopian tubes, a condition that aids in the movement of sperm to the egg. Therefore, if orgasm happens just before or during ejaculation, the resulting conception (if at all) is usually that of a boy.

3. Intercourse Position & Depth of Penetration: usually the acidity of women's reproductive tract decreases inwards. This means vaginal area is more acidic than cervical area and the trend continues into the uterus. Shettles therefore encourages intercourse that allows for deep penetration. Rear entry (aka, doggy-style) is recommended. Look at the photo below

   The above set ups will ensure that sperm is deposited near the cervix where fluid is less acidic and more friendly to the Y chromosome sperm. Secondly, since Y chromosome sperm is fragile and die off easily, deep penetration ensures they get to the egg first as there's less distance to travel and they move faster than X Chromosome Sperm.

4. Timing of Intercourse: it has been established that the closer to ovulation you have sex, the better the chances to have a boy. The idea is that at ovulation...the less viscous alkaline egg white cervical mucus (EWCM) is produced and since Y sperm is faster and more alkaline friendly, they are more likely to reach the egg first and fertilize it. For this reason, time lovemaking directly prior to and during ovulation, when you have EWCM.

5. High Sperm Count: to begin with, a low sperm count favours neither Y nor X sperm. However, it is more destructive to Y sperm. Boy conceptions are favored more over the girls when sperm count is high. Sperm count tends to be highest if there is abstinence from sex for 2 to 6 days with day 4 being the optimal and day 7 seeing a drop on the percentage of viable sperm. To increase the sperm-pooling-effect and the percentage of possible viable Y sperm, therefore, it is ideal, according to Shettles, to avoid sex during transitional fertile days (4-5) days prior to ovulation. Have intercourse only just at the time of ovulation and just before.

6. Cool the Testicles: although heat kills both sperm types but it will kill Y sperm faster since the are relatively small and fragile. Shettles recommends having cold showers 30 minutes before sex. He also advises men to always wear loose-fitting underwears like boxers while advising men against exposing themselves to substances that impair fertility, including smoking, wearing tight constructive underwears (such as briefs), habitual bicycling, hot baths. Others include activities that expose the testes to heat, hot vehicles excessive drinking of alcohol and intake of coffee (more than 2 cups a day), etc

7. Caffeinated Drinks: Shettles recommends a cup of Caffeinated coffee for men 30 minutes before intercourse. He believes it gives Y sperm a jolt to 'beat' X sperm in the race to fertilize the egg. Be warned heavy intake of coffee, more than 2-3 cups per day can impair fertility.

The woman should try and stay in bed for about 2 hours after sex. And if possible, she should place a pillow under her hip to raise it slightly. This is aimed at encouraging the sperm to enter the uterus..

Due to the optimal activities of male hormones in the morning, early morning intercourse is strongly recommended.

In conclusion, it is worthy of note that many of the Shettles suggestions for boys are also general recommendations for couples who are trying to conceive any gender baby (not just a boy). This is because it helps couples to have sex during ovulation which is the most fertile period.
