Look, I’m all for the idea of remote computers in the cloud. If you have a fixed internet connection and it’s super fast, your in a stable broadband contract relationship or maybe you live in a swanky building with gigabit fibre connection then fantastic — this remote super fast connection to their cloud computer to play with a high spec gaming machine is awesome.
The problem is nobody has ever got the cloud remote service right, well not yet at least — maybe shadow.tech can be the first ones to offer a service that will do the job properly, personally I can’t see it, first of all the cost of the service is ‘too damn high’ — if it was £9.99 a month then maybe, I did however like this line. . .
For a flat monthly fee, you can rent a gaming PC in a data center near you. You can then access this beefy computer using desktop and mobile apps as well as the company’s own little box. It’s a full-fledged Windows 10 instance — you can install Steam, Battle.net or whatever you want.
Or ‘whatever you want’ — hmm, what about me installing a Zcash miner on that geforce gtx1080 bad boy if it’s my ‘instance’ that way I can play games when I want and then in the spare time it’s doing something for me to pay for you damn service, think of it as a shared hybrid solution otherwise this is just a bunch of invested money in a solution that’s gonna be out of date in three months and you’ll be constantly updating the hardware. hmm.
Look, don’t get me wrong I’m not trying to ride on ya service I’m trying to help you out here to be realistic, gamers already have their hardware, they ain’t gonna change for something they wanna tinker with, upgrade in a months time and even have that input/tracking lag down to milliseconds instead of that added latency of the connection to what basically is a very intense vnc / remote control setup — sure the possibilities are endless with what you can do remotely and from whatever device has the ability to connect to it but you need that flawless internet connection.
Finally, you can also get Shadow’s own little box that you can plug directly to your TV or a monitor. You can rent it for an additional £7.95 per month or pay £109.95 once. The first 500 British subscribers will get it for free.
I mean I guess the jury is out until we start to hear the reviews, for me it would be a great service but I just don’t have a fast enough 4g cellular connection that’s gonna always be over 15 meg but using my five year old iMac to game on an up to date system remotely would be neat if the lag was not that bad and you’ve got the added backup of some serious firewalls I’m guessing from the host connection perspective.
One day someone is gonna get this right but then do we want a real life version of ‘player one ready’ now or later? And even then will we really want to just have a tokenised crypto solution to our computing hardware that rely on the connect to the grid? I know we sold our privacy for choice but we should be extra careful selling our connection to computing at the expense of digital access.
