I don't know how to see the hive numbers for the communities that I have joined.

Hi Melinda, you need to place the hive tag as first tag in order for the post to be categorised in the community, otherwise it will be a normal blog post. Sorry I did not vote your post since other curators did it before me, so I'm saving my priority to the other users. Anyway, sending you a !tip as replacement since my vote worth virtually nothing except to trigger boss's trail.

You need the hive number when posting from eSteem, but if you post from Steemit or Steempeak you need to make Shadowhunters your first tag, right? I want to be able to tell contest participants how it works.

You're right. When posting from steemit or steempeak, you do not require that hive number. The tag will find its way to the hive.

The other front end that can be used to post directly in communities is Steempeak.

So it appears that from eSteem you need to use the hive-179017 number as your first tag, but from Steemit or Steempeak #Shadowhunters needs to be your first tag.
I guess we should begin to retire the #shadowphoto tag.

If you post from Steem or Steempeak it is easier to do it directly from the community and then the first tag is automatically #shadowhunters (if post from that community). Steempeak is guving the option of crosspost and the post to be shown in another community.
With the communities some tags will be no more useable.

It is getting a bit confusing on when to use the hive number. But, in the communities, it says it is defaut. Some challenges will have to adjust their rules that want you to include the hive number if you post them there first. Perhaps, it will all work out soon.

Here is how I do (but from Steemit) : once you are logged, you get all your communities on the left, when you click on them, you get the adress on the bar and you just have to take the end with the hive and number @melinda0100

I'm wondering now how much about Communities and Steemit will even be relevant once the dust settles around here. I was willing to give Steemit a try, since I thought communities was a good idea, but now I think I may avoid Steemit until we know more.
