Shapla is a type of aquatic plant in the flowering family. All the plants in this family are known as water lilies.
There are 35 species of water lilies in the world. Shapla flower English water lily, white lotus.
The ancient Egyptians have been fond of blue water lilies and white water lilies for thousands of years. It is written that in India, Hindus worship the snake goddess Manasa and give her water lilies.
In Bengal the blue flower is called Shaluk or Nilkamal. And the red water lily is called Raktakamal. Shapla flowers of various colors can be seen, only the mother white shapla flower is called the national flower of Bangladesh. The English name is White Water Lily.
Shapla flowers bloom during the day, but in the light of the night chad this flower blooms more. Shuffler stems are directly attached to the roots. The leaves floating above the round water are green at the top and black at the bottom.
Shapla flowers look like stars. The middle uterine cells are yellow in color. Shapla flower is called Shail. Eaten as a vegetable. Puspadanda is also eaten as a vegetable. Available in the market during the rainy season.
Shapla flowers have various medicinal properties. This plant is taken out of the water and dried in the sun and used as cattle feed. White water lily has been chosen as the national flower due to its high availability.
But now due to overpopulation and depletion of water bodies, this plant has become rare. The national flower of Sri Lanka is Shapla. But not white shapla, blue shapla. In Sri Lanka this flower is known as Neel Mahanel.
In Sri Lankan language, this flower is often called Blue Lotus in English.
Shapla flowers have been valued in different parts of the world since ancient times. White water lily Bangladesh is also found in India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Yemen, Taiwan, Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam and many more countries.
The national emblem was adopted in Bangladesh in 1971. In the center of the national symbol of Bangladesh - The place of the national flower shuffler floating in the water.
