Naming mass shooters and publishing their manifestos are not the same thing.

Of course, I generally support the policy of not naming mass shooters. They shouldn't get the credit that they desire for murdering innocent people.

This push to not publish the Nashville shooter's manifesto isn't the same thing. We've had pretty much every mass shooter's manifesto published. It's useful to understand motivations and gain insights into what drives a monster to commit these crimes.

The stated reasons that people have for keeping this one buried is worries that it will spur hatred for trans people. Of course, that's bullshit. We already know that the shooter was trans. No moron who is going to target random trans people out of hate is going to wait for confirmation of motives.

It's a reasonable assumption that the attack came from a radical leftist out of hatred for Christianity. It's just as reasonable an assumption that a white dude shooting up a black church was motivated by racism. People are making the assumption, publishing the manifesto is either going to confirm or refute the assumptions; but, it won't exacerbate the actions of people who are already in a dark mindset. All this suppression does is increase the assumption that there's something in it that the people who have seen it don't want us to read.

In fact, there's good reason to believe that. The police already said that the shooter considered different targets and decided against them because there were armed people present. There goes the media narrative that we need more gun control.

What else could be in there that doesn't fit the media narrative? I'm guessing a lot.
