There wasn't a word for it

in short-story •  7 years ago  (edited)

I was minding my own business telling jokes.
"Why do Jews have big noses??? Because air is free" I said.
I was suddenly accosted by someone who accused the joke of being anti-Semitic.
"How can it be anti-Semitic, when the joke doesn't even criticize the state of Israel..." I explained.
Thankfully the crowd backed me up. And we removed the person who thought anti-semitism had something to do with Jewish people. They had obviously never seen the word used in context.

Later on I saw a mob attacking some Jewish people. I called the police and tried to tell them what was going on, but there wasn't a word for it.

A 'pogrom' is what I think they used to call a mob attacking Jews. :-)

Mystery solved!

I have a feeling your hypothetical policeman may be just as bewildered with the word 'pogrom'.

RiskDebonair: "I'm witnessing a pogrom on 4th and Main!"

Policeman: "A what?!?!"

RiskDebonair: "A progrom you idiot!"
