A few weeks ago, I realized how considerate of a person I am. I’m on a C17, flying back to my duty location. I typically stay awake during flights, listening to music, or whatever.
The flight, so far, was smooth, and I can tell we’re descending. There are no real windows, but I’m looking out one of the ports on the opposite side of the plane. Suddenly, flares go off.
Maybe I’ve been deployed too much, but I didn’t really have too much of an initial reaction. I just thought to myself, "so, this is how it’s gonna go down huh?"
Without saying a word, I look at the crew member like, "Do you see this s#it?" He looks back at me like, "Hell yeah, I see that!" He starts pushing some buttons, and jumps on the radio. I go sit back down and buckle up, just in time for some fancy flying by the pilot.
Everyone else is sleep. Half of them probably didn’t have their seatbelts on, and had no clue what was going down.
I didn’t even bother them. The way I saw it, if this was indeed our time, I’m not gonna wake you up for that. I’ll give you the courtesy of going out peacefully......a hater would have woke you up.
Turns out we flew over a large fire, and the IR triggered the flares on the plane, because it identified as a missile. At least we know it works.
