What If: You Wake Up And You’re The Last Person on Earth

in shower-thoughts •  7 years ago

Have you ever imagined what it would be like to wake up one day and find out that you are somehow the last person left on Earth? This is such a bizarre question, that the brain freezes for a bit in trying to think about the implications.

Of course the chances of this happening is practically zero but let’s imagine for the sake of this post that it actually happens to you. What would you do? How would you go about your life? It is one interesting thought to ponder upon.

The Day Everybody Disappears

0.jpg

So, you wake up one day and as you open your eyes, you suddenly get the feeling that things are quieter than usual. A little too quiet. Maybe it’s just that there is less traffic than usual but as you make your way out of bed and look through the window, you get the shock of your life.

As you glance around, you see no one at all. The street which is usually full of people is completely empty. To see what is going on, you head downstairs and outside the house. As you roam around the neighbourhood, the realisation dawns on you that something terrible must have happened.

As you keep walking further and see no signs of human life, you begin to wonder if the zombie apocalypse on your favourite TV show has become a reality. You immediately grow cautious and take every step carefully. You even take the baseball bat that you find lying on the ground with you just in case.

The panic starts to set in and you reach for your phone to call your family and friends. Nobody answers. Not one of them. You call the police and even they do not pick up the phone. You then head back, get in your car and go on a drive throughout the city. Not a single soul to be seen. What happened?

Coming To Terms With It

1.jpg

After an entire day of driving around the city and not seeing a single person, you begin to think that you are in a dream and soon you will wake up and all this will be over. It doesn’t. You start panicking more.

You come back home and turn on the TV to watch the news. Nothing. There are no shows being broadcast. You check your Facebook wall and there have been no posts by your friends the entire day!

It’s almost as if everyone just vanished! Could it be? Could it actually be that everyone just disappeared without a trace leaving you behind for some odd reason? The grief of losing the loved ones start taking over and all you can do is cry. But in some corner of the mind, the thought that you are all alone sounds stupid and you brush it off thinking someone else has to be out there.

A few days later, and after exploring even further than your own city, you are slowly coming to terms with the fact that as impossible as it may sound, you really are alone. Maybe there are people in other big cities or other countries but as far as you know, you are alone.

Learning To Survive

2.jpg

Thankfully there are no zombies in the world and that should make survival a lot easier. There are basically three needs you need to fulfil and they are food, clothing and shelter. As there are more than enough empty houses and more than enough clothes in the supermarkets, you are able to satisfy two of the three needs easily and pretty much forever.

There is also an abundance of food and water in restaurants, supermarkets and other such places. But these supplies won’t remain fresh forever. Vegetables and fruits start going bad soon and unpreserved water would start getting stagnant.

So, you quickly start stocking up on canned food as these can remain edible for decades and also on bottled water, as this is the only source of water that you can be sure about its purity. With no one around, water supply to homes will eventually stop working.

Even with all these, you feel the need to be extra prepared just in case and so start learning basic agriculture via several books you find in the library, so that you are able to grow some vegetables and fruits.

One other thing that you realise is that electricity supply will soon stop as well as there would be no one manning the power plants. Therefore you start making the necessary arrangements.

A Meaningless Future?

So, you use your wits and time (which you have a lot of) to ensure your survival for the foreseeable future. It takes you quite some time to set up a system and adjust in this new world but you eventually do it.

But now you start thinking about your needs beyond just food and shelter. After all, you are a human being and humans need other humans to satisfy their psychological and social needs.

Without anybody around, the loneliness becomes your worst enemy and you struggle to find any meaning in continuing your life. Even if you are the solitary type, once in a while you miss your friends and family and the presence of any other person you can speak to. After all it’s been weeks since you have heard your own voice.

If you stick with it Im sure you will gain a following here! Infact I follow you now :) have a blessed day.

I will make some pan cakes and enjoy rest of my life playing videos games and exploring the mother nature.

haha good plan!!! I would do something along the same lines.

That's why I thought too - find a nice car to carry me around and explore :)

and guess what you will not see any fucking traffic and bullshit terrorism or racism.

Wow, you have quite an active imagination :) I think I would make myslef a cup of tea, grab a good book and enjoy the peace and quite...this world gets a bit much for me. I wonder how different the world would look with no people, would we notice things we never noticed before? Thanks for the story :) Much love, @sweetpea

Thank you for the kind words. Yeah, I guess we would be able to do what we have always wanted to but never had the time to.

According to me if anyone is surrounded by the people who doesn't care than definitely and empty world will give you so much piece and love.

OMG... will GoT still be around? You didn't mention it in the article! I need to know... 😂😂😂

Well... if there are no humans left, but animals are still around, I think I'll join a wolf pack! AND I'll run around naked and no will know or care 😀😀😀

Haha I'm sure you could find a lot of dvds in stores and you could play it again and again!! LOL

oh good. I feel better already :P

This sounds a lot like "Earth Abides" by George R. Stewart. It is a really good book if you like science fiction.

How about adding some Dead Zombies to the empty world?

Or, how about being the last man living in a bunker with some half cooked Zombies on the surface and run away Greenhouse effect frying off everything but a few bacteria. That would be really scary, LOL.

hell yeah that would be scary man.LOL

Oh, I haven't heard of it. Will definitely check it out :)

Oh my... What an eye catching subject heading there.. I have often wondered if anybody else has had that thought as I used to dream that I had either just woken up or got back home or somewhere to find that everything had changed and that there was only me around... So then I'd go running around looking to see if I could find others and wake up in a panic when I'd been running around long enough to get tired 😕 I recall first having that dream when I was about 6 years old and it used to recur every now and then though it's been a while now...

Yeah, it would be pretty scary at first and you would be full of questions. A nightmare for sure.

Awesome thought experiment. I'm just gonna go for it.
Ok...

So, I would definitely stock pile food (maybe bury cans?) fortify my home base, and start a garden. This would give me time to get straight mentally.

After a time when my survival skills were primed and I had ammo, I would have to set out walking. I don't see myself being able to accept there was nobody out there. From California, I would choose the coastal route through Mexico, Central America, and to the tip of South America. If there were humans, they may be near the ocean. I would grab rad surf boards out of shops along the coast the whole way. Maybe find a really high quality bicycle and set it up for travel.

Hope of finding other humans would keep me on the road until the end of time. At some point, I may try to discover something spiritually with a visit to the great pyramids in Egypt if things became hopeless.

YAYAYAYAYAYAY.
That was fun. Thanks for setting up that little daydream for me. I thoroughly enjoyed that. Cheers my friend.
Have a great rest of your day.

Wow, that is quite a to-do list. But I guess with all the time in your hands, you could do anything!! hehe

...all the time in the world, you might say.

I think that all the fight to survive makes sense only if you believe there must be someone left and one you will find them. You have a hope, at lest. Were you to really really believe you are the only one left, there would be no point to keep living. Better kill yourself and be done with it.
(Personally, I'd hope it's zombies and keep trying to find Daryl or Negan!)

Yeah, a person in such a scenario just can't be sure if he really is alone.

You have to call NSA ,
Robots are working there, and they will work with you.
Npr.

interesting question but not a possibility

Its possible but only in VR (Virtual Reality)

I know. Hence the shower-thought.

Loneliness would kill you

yeah, that would be a major problem.

Solar panels, batteries, books, DVDs, places to go visit, things to do...

I think there would be more than enough to keep you amused if you paid attention to all the new possibilities that would exist.

Seeing other people, hearing other people, via recordings, or books, would help a lot.

Naturally, it wouldn't be as good as having the real thing, but it would be a good crutch to have.

Yeah, lots of things to undertake that you just didn't have time for in life.

sounding like "I am legend" movie..haha

minus the zombies ;)

haha, yes and the dog..

as a stroke survivor i'd be s.o.l. as i have to rely on others to assist me with many daily routines that most people take for granted. there are so many aspects of our daily modern lives that are maintained by others such as water, electricity, food, etc. even the simplest tasked that our great grand parents could accomplish would be beyond most of us unless they were a prepper, a diyer or a survivalist. even the smallest injury could spell a slow and agonizing death

Yes, I completely agree with you there.

great work dudee keep it up..

Thanks for reading :)

Good!

Thanks!

Another thought provoking post by you. Loving these!

I would most likely just travel. Break into someone's Tesla and hope that the charger network will still work for a few years. And then drive around Europe (or at least wherever you have sufficient chargers to keep you going :P ) Just pack the car full of food and just visit anything I could. Enjoy the feeling of sunlight illuminating and heating my face whilst (trying) to feel grateful for everything I've had...

No idea how long I could last though. Feeling of everything being pointless would catch up eventually.

yeah, travelling is something most people would do. It would become free and there would be no traffic. haha!! But yes, eventually the feeling of "purpose" will catch up with you. You visit all these beautiful places but you are alone and you'll have no one to share your experiences with. Pretty daunting.

I'd stock up on food. Gasoline would be good for a while, so that would make it easy to cruise around looking for other people. Once I gave up on that I would likely adopt a bunch of stray doga and start educating myself and preparing to survive off the crumbling infrastructure around me. Books and solar powered TV and gaming should keep me occupied. Having no human companionship would suck, and the mystery of what happened to the rest of humanity would probably haunt me, but I think basic survival projects for myself and my pets would keep me relatively fullfilled and happy. Life without even pets though would probably be unbearable.

Yeah, any person who would use his wits would be able to survive because there would be a lot of resources to use with no one else for competition. As for the mystery, yes, one would never know and that question could even drive one crazy!

greate poste food and love ♥ ♥
