Daily Coin # 5

in silver-hammer •  7 years ago  (edited)

The coin I have chosen for today's daily coin is an Irish 10 shilling , circulating , commemorative coin from 1966 ! The coin was minted to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the Irish Easter uprising of 1916 !! This beautiful 83% specimen weighs in at 18.144 grams , and has a diameter of 30.5 mm , and is 3.21 mm thick . There were 2,000,000 of these coins minted but 1,270,000 were melted down in the early 70s ! The concave obverse features a portrait of Padraig Pearse.

The equally concave reverse features the figure of Cú Chulainn which is a miniature of the statue by Oliver Sheppard, currently in the General Post Office, Dublin.

The edge of this awesome coin features the words " Éirí Amach na Cásca 1916" written in Gaelic which translates into "Easter Rising 1916"
