Well, actually is 1/10 of an ounce of silver. But back then there was no manipulation on silver price and the gold/silver ratio was 1:17 and today is 1:75.
With 1 denarius you could give bread to your family for one week or with 4 denarius you could buy a tunic.

If the mining/supply ratio is similar, it would mean that gold is too expensive.
I invested a small amount in silver when the price was about 30$.
