SINGERS ADVICE: I have a cold! What should I do!

in singing •  8 years ago

Everybody gets colds, Singers always get them 4 days before a big show!

Here is the Singers recovery list we give to Fine Tune Academy students.

This is handy for anyone trying to keep their voice through a cold or flu.

As soon as you feel a tickle in your throat or that first sneeze, start taking action:

  1. Lots of sleep

  2. Lots of water (warm is better as it helps to loosen mucus)

  3. Warm Tea with honey.

  8. Limit your Talking and No Singing.

  9. Good Diet. Give your body the tools it needs to heal. Go easy on Milk and Cheese.

  10. Start warming up your voice 4 hours before the event. (Fine Tune Warmups Sheets 1+2)

  11. Singers throat spray can help a borderline voice last a little longer, and crack less in the upper register.

Bad Symptoms / * Temporary relief to get you through a show

A trip to the doctor for a few minutes on a Nebulizer can work wonders. Many doctors will prescribe a portable inhaler or pill to suppress symptoms. Lung infections/Sinus Infections may require more care.

Robatussin cough medicine and other Cold and flu remedies will make you feel better for a few hours if you are borderline and need to sing or talk for an extended period of time.
If your throat feels sore, this stuff works pretty quickly.

GENERAL

Generally, the advice is to get the Mucus out of your body by coughing or blowing your nose. Lots of rest and be good to your body.

Tissues: Buy the ones with Aloe or similar, they really help reduce the damage to your nostrils from constant nose blowing.

ALL singers have missed shows due to Colds, Flu's and related common illnesses. It is an unavoidable part of the trade.

Communicate with your Manager or the Promoter to keep everyone in the loop as soon as possible, with advance notice another act can be found or the show rescheduled.
