Hiccups are called singultus n medical terms. This is a condition in which a characteristic sound is involuntary, due to the sudden closing of the vocal cords triggered by contraction of the diaphragm. Hiccups can be experienced by anyone, including newborns. Hiccups can last for a few seconds or minutes, up to more than 48 hours. Hiccups are common due to things like overeating and stress, and are usually harmless. Hiccups are the effect of a sudden contraction of the diaphragm muscle. The sound that occurs during hiccups occurs when the vocal cords close during the contraction of the muscle. Most hiccups will go away on their own. Rarely is hiccups considered a serious medical condition. Although usually those who experience hiccups feel disturbed, but there is a function of the hiccups itself, namely to eliminate the amount of air in the stomach. The reason is, every contraction in the chest is able to suck air in the abdominal cavity. In some cases, there are also hiccups that can last longer, which is more than two days. Usually, hiccups like this are caused by health problems, including: Metabolic disorders, such as hypoglycemia, hyperglycemia, and diabetes.
