Body Language: What You Say Without Speaking

in sirwinchester •  8 years ago

We communicate with more than just our speech.
Body Language plays an important role in our life - although most people are not aware of it!

We always talk in Body Language - continuously, 24/7.

So by observing someone else's behaviour, we can learn a lot from them!
Even if they tell us that they feel or think a certain way, body language exposes how they truly feel.

First, let's focus on the eyes.

The eyes are also called the "mirror of the soul" - you can tell a lot about a person's feelings if you closely observe their eye movements!

  • If Person A raises their eyebrows when they look at someone who entered the room, it can be interpreted that Person A likes them or is happy to see them.
On the other hand if Person A doesn't raise their eyebrows at all, it's likely that they have a neutral or negative relationship to the other person.
  • If someone blinks too often, it can be a sign of uncertainty.
  • If someone squints, they might question something you said or evaluate its truth skeptically.
  • If Person A looks down a lot or looks around hastily, it shows a sign of ignorance or insecurity.
  • If Person A accepts your eye contact and keeps it up, it means that they want to keep up the conversation as well.
  • If Person A looks to their right, they might be trying to remember something (or think about something).
  • When they look to their left, the thoughts are more creative - which also means that they might be lying because they are constructing an answer.

Next: The mouth!

We don't only eat and speak with our mouth - we also smile. One of the most important signals of body language! A smile can tell so much about a person's feelings.

  • A genuine smile generally transforms the whole face, the eyes light up and crease.
  • If Person A smiles only with their lips, it's mostly a fake smile, sending out a different message than what the person really feels.
  • If someone smiles for too long, it makes them look artificial or insecure.
  • If someone lifts only one corner of their mouth, in can be interpreted as a feeling of superiority.

Hand Gestures

Our hands accompany our speech most of the time. Certain cultures might do this more than others, but in general, we can read a lot of information by observing someone else's hand movements while they talk.

  • Crossed arms: suggests denial (in men) and uncertainty (in women).
  • If someone plays with their fingers a lot, it can be a sign of a lack of concentration or nervousness.
  • If someone rests their head upon their arms/hands, it's a sign for exhaustion or boredom.
  • Folding your hands sends a message of feeling superior.
  • If Person A has their hands in their pocket while talking, it can be viewed as rude or ignorant.
  • If someone is constantly picking their clothes (unnecessarily) it could mean that they want to escape the situation or don't want to tell the truth.
  • Touching or stroking the chin suggests deep thinking.
  • When a person touches their neck while talking, it could mean that they are uncomfortable or feel like being pressured.
  • Touching / rubbing the nose during a conversation could mean doubt or thinking.

Another great post with an interesting and relevant topic. Body language, energy, intention, word choice, message context, and tonal delivery are all indicators of what we wish to convey to others or show or tell about ourselves. You are an expert in body language as you are a skilled dancer and understand the mechanics and fluidity the human body allows and what it can express to the viewer. Upvoted

thank you for your great feedback.
You are right, there are so many different factors that influence this non-verbal communication!

body language is sooooo interesting - there is so much more to it than we think, and everything happens subconsciously!

you're right, and we don't even notice it and rarely use it to our advantage!

Volumes of words are spoken in mere seconds. The question is: does anybody care enough to read into all that?

interesting items fantastic graphics
we are people watchers ! its a great observation

thank you!
And you're right, we can learn so much from observing our own behaviour!

it's crazy what the human body does and we don't even notice

it all happens subconsciously, and we control it although we don't even realize that!

I love posts like these, very informative. looking forward to more science / psychology

thank you, glad you liked the post

Yes, that's definitely something we can now look out for in others.
and you never stop learning!

thanks for sharing, lots of interesting information and definitely some things I didnt know yet

glad you enjoyed it!

I wish I could read everyone's body language constantly, that would be awesome!! But I feel like there's so many tiny signs to notice and be aware of

it may be hard at first but you get quicker with the time!

I would love to learn more about body language, psychology is so interesting to me and we humans have so much yet to discover about OURSELVES!

agreed!

Very good, i had already heard about this being very powerful and it is, but i rather not know about this, i dont want to constantly analyze people i talk with whethere they lie to me or not.

I will just rather trust them, i dont really want to be too analytical.

Hi, I like the topic of body language.
Here you talk about how the body conveys what you really are thinking. It translates as a betrayal of the body on your mind, or can be an unconscious betrayal of your mind to use your body to reveal what they really think and feel?

I would like to know more about body language, you have helped me reawaken the interest on the subject.

The list of languages that have placed body is complete, but there are many more. It is a subject of serious study and served a lot, especially to find out who is lying. If you plan to continue the subject, it has my reading.

Greetings.
