The DJI Phantom 4 Drone!

in sirwinchester •  8 years ago

I have always been interested in technology and cameras as well -  so ever since the first drones came out, I was excited for all the possibilities offer you!

So finally, I got one: The Phantom 4 by DJI!

It's is the latest 4K Camera drone by the market leader, and is supposed to be the perfect model between professional and hobby photographers.

The scope of delivery features the drone itself, 8 rotor blades, one battery, a controller, a 16GB micro SD card, charging cables, and a styrofoam case.

Although the drone is a professional camera and offers a wide variety of filming options, it's still beginner-friendly and can be controlled by anyone who doesn't have drone experience yet (as long as they're familiar with the settings!)
There is a very useful "return to home" button on the controller, that will have the drone returning to its start point if you've lost sight of it.  When the drone reaches 30% battery (one battery lasts about 28 minutes), it will automatically calculate the battery needed to return to the start point, and then start its flight home by itself.
Also, there is a "Beginner Mode" that keeps the drone within reach and has all obstacle avoidance Modi installed.

Although the drone detects big objects like buildings easily, there are a few things you need to keep in mind with obstacle avoidance:

  •  there are only sensors at the front - not at the back ! So make sure you know in which direction you're flying when you lose sight of the drone
  • moving objects like branches of trees cannot ALWAYS be detected. It depends on their visibility and the level of wind.  So it's a great feature, but you should never rely on it working!

Once the drone is in the air, its surprisingly stable and offers a perfectly clear shot - as if the camera was resting on a tripod in mid-air.
For anyone that's already a Pro at flying drones, DJI has also introduced a "Sport Mode".  It offers a speed of up to 70 km/h, and reacts much quicker.
But this is only for very experienced pilots - ALL assistant modes are turned off! So there's nothing (other than your own skills) that prevent the drone from crashing.
Also, when doing quick turns or stops, the rotor blades will be in sight of the camera.

Technical specifications:

  • Weight: 1380g
  • Diagonal length: 350mm
  • Battery life time: 28 minutes - depending on your flight behavior. Extra batteries cost around €120
  • Camera: 4K recordings at 30 frames per second

Testing out the "Active Track" Mode

Flight Modi:

  • Active Track: you can mark a person or moving object on your DJI App, and the drone will follow it around (as long as there are no obstacles in the way)
  • Tap Fly: you can tap on a specific object, and the drone will fly to that point on its own.
  • Follow me: follows the GPS signal of the controller in 10m height
  • Point of interest: lets the drone fly around a specific set point, offering a 360 degrees view on it.
  • Waypoints: you can set a specific route with your drone and mark certain keyframes. After the route has been recorded, the drone will then follow the path on its own
  • Home lock or Course lock: keeps the drone in the starting direction or any specific direction, and movements will be made in that direction only.

And now, let's look at some areal footage!

The DJI Phantom 4 is amazingly easy and fun to fly. And the footage it records is breathtaking - there are so many possibilities of using these shots in creative ways! I'm looking forward to a lot more fun and great shots with this!

Welcome to the drone club! :-) I've got a Phantom 3 myself and absolutely love it. (There's some footage in my blog if you're interested). As you mentioned, the stability is absolutely amazing. I've even managed to take 4 second exposure photos at night from 400 feet!

May you have much pleasure from your new toy! :)

your drone video is awesome!
the smoothness in mid-air is really awesome. I already like really slow moving shots, and how perfectly clear the view says.
the camera is just perfect quality!

Wow, amazing shots and high quality drone! -Re-Steemed 👍

thank you! I really enjoy it too. the recording is really very high quality.

looks so fun. totally like a toy for adults!

a toy that has professional use as well!

I think drones are one of the greatest inventions of the last decades. they offer SO many possibilities!

definitely. you can really live out your creativity as a film-maker (or photographer) with them!

I want one, this looks awesome. And I didn't know they were so beginner friendly. all the features and flight modi sound really fun

it's really not as hard as one might think, and the obstacle avoidance works pretty well in most cases!

looking forward to more drone footage from now on!
the quality looks really good, even as a gif

in reality, the quality is insane!

Overpriced drone :)) But easy to use for newbie

yes the price is not that cheap, but you pay for very high quality. the drone itself as well as the camera and recordings are really great.

I know :) I was had the hobby to construct quadrocopter drones :)
Phantom it's something like plug & play system :) no need skills to start.
Just open box and you ready to fly with minimum adjustment :)

I always wanted s drone, those views from above look so AWESOME

even if the weather is not that great, the shots always look so impressive!

I have a parrot one, but DJI is very high quality as well.
awesome, have fun with your new equipment + possibilities to create great shots!

thank you - I definitely will!
And parrot is a great brand as well.

I've been hesitating to get a drone myself, but I can't deny that the shots just look spectacular.. maybe I'll have to get one now!
And DJI just released a new portable drone, maybe its worth checking out. although i already like the case of the phantom 4.

Yes I saw it, but I'm very happy with the phantom 4. It's already quite easy to transport, and the styrofoam case looks great (it's much more durable than you'd expect)

Very cool!

thanks :)

it really looks like it's sitting on a tripod up there, the image is so smooth!

the stability is better than I imagined - the image stays so clear and static!

your city looks beautiful! maybe I need to visit germany ;)

it's even more beautiful when the sun comes out and shines above the lake!

the only downside of this is the battery life - half an hour is nothing :/ everybody will need to buy extra batteries. but still, great camera and I'm sure it's lots of fun to fly

unfortunately, the drone industry is not so far developed yet. Everybody probably bought 1-2 spare batteries with this one. but it's okay, all the other features are great, and we'll get there in the future!

isn't it crazy how humans have always dreamt of flying, and now they have built airplanes and flying cameras like this one?!

you're right. and the drone is so powerful! it can really fly quite fast (and high.)
technology is awesome!

Awersome!!!
This is a device that is very nice for a filmmaker, we do not have to capture images of helicop, but could use this as a 4 DJI Phantom drone. thank review.

you're right, this is an awesome tool for professional filmmakers. there are endless possibilities!

Damn I want one.

I genuinely think autonomous drones will be as ubiquitous as mobile phones in twenty years, performing basic tasks of all kinds.

that could be the future!
Might be quite a strange thought for us now but I can easily imagine that!

Where is the picture of the smile on your face as you were pilotting it?

that moment wasn't captured because I was too excited to try it out! It's a lot of fun flying it.

Nice toy, like to have one :)

nice voll stalker mode on !!

love the drone!

Wow this is awesome! I bought a drone too but it was only a 150$ drone and it does not have nearly as many feature as yours does.

that follow feature looks really cool (and useful) !

it's so much easier and steadier than manually following a person (or an object) around!

The difference between boys and men is the PRICE of their toys =)

ha! well, it's a useful toy as well ;)
