The Microsoft HoloLens !

The new "HoloLens" Augmented-Reality Glasses by Microsoft combines the world around you with Virtual Reality and 3D elements.

While you can still see your surroundings, the glasses render virtual reality objects that interact with your real vision - for example by creating a hole in the wall.

The glasses analyze your environment and recognize walls or furniture!

The first thing we notice about the glasses is that they look quote heavy and bulky - they weigh over half a kilogram and fit all the way around the users head.

The glasses operate with windows software, and you can do normal things like browse the web or watch videos, as well as play games that have been specifically designed for the HoloLens.
Before opening each application, you first have to select where you want to place it in your field of vision - and it will stay there as you move around.
You can also place 3D holograms in your surroundings that you can then look at like a virtual statue.

There have been games especially developed for the HoloLens - for example a game where monsters attack you crawling through your walls, and you shoot them with a virtual weapon that is being rendered to your hand (and it moves as you move your hand too!)

You can navigate through the virtual world by Air-Tapping (Tapping on the virtual screen in front of your eyes with your hands) which replicates a mouse-click on the computer.

This is a concept we have seen in futuristic Hollywood movies a lot already, and now Microsoft has brought it to real life.
But multiple reports say that it's not fully developed yet - when typing things via the keybord, it can take quite a little bit of practice!

And there seems to be another downside: the relatively small field of vision.
While the human eye naturally picks up about 180 degrees of our surroundings, VR Glasses like the Oculus Rift manage to pick up a bout 100 degrees, while the HoloLens only offers maybe 40 degrees.
This means that you can't step too closely to anything because things at the edge of your field of vision will disappear, destroying the illusion everytime.

There is a big difference from Virtual Reality headsets, like the Oculus Rift for example: while they are big and chunky and basically put a whole screen in front of your eyes, the HoloLens is see-through and can therefore interact with your environment.
Also, the HoloLens doesn't have to be plugged into a PC like normal VR Headsets - everything is included in the glasses and you can move without any wires. The battery lasts about 2-3 hours.

While the technical aspect of these glasses is impressive, for me this lacks in usability.

People don't want to walk around with glasses on their head that look like a helmet from StarTrek - they are way too bulky in my opinion.
The sleek, feather light version of the google glass was much slimmer and probably more comfortable to wear.

Nice post. I agree that today's versions of the hardware are pretty clunky, but as I point out in this post that will all soon change as the technology begins to improve in iterations.

Google glass is able to get away with being so slim and small because it does far less than something like Microsoft Hololens. It's the same with VR headsets like Oculus Rift and HTC Vive. It's technically les demanding to make an entire complete world virtually than it is to integrate a virtual world with a physical one. Of course, that's all pretty obvious, but I wanted to point it out to any that might walk away thinking: 'Hololens sucks'.

It's incredibly impressive from a technical standpoint, just not quite commercially viable yet. When it does get there (probably in less than 5 years), it will become a billion dollar industry.

yes, the hololens definitely has a lot more features. The google glass doesn't render objects inside your environment.
So I definitely understand that it has to be bigger, but still, if this should be wearable everyday I think they should still improve it and slim it down.

Agreed. They have quite a ways to go before they bring it to the public at large. That's an important point about rendering in environments. Totally beyond Google Glass right now. Bur you're right: as impressive as it is, no one's going to want to wear a helmet out and about.

Motorcycle, while ski ing...construction site...some places wearing a helmet is appropriate.

Upvoted, altough I don't need virtual realities. The really true realitiy is bad enough. lol.

ha, true!

I want one!

can you order these already ??

they just opened up for normal orders, the price is around $3,000 though

this would be soooo fun to play around with :D

excellent invention ever congratulations technology advances more by the discovery, thanks for sharing

glad you liked it. technology is continuously advancing so we'll see more VR products in the future!

they are soo big.. but the effects look awesome. would be interested to try it out!

AWESOME! But I agree, they still lack in usability. I can't picture hundreds of people walking on the street with these huge things on their heads.
but the technical aspect is definitely top-notch

that's true - but the first iphone started out really chunky as well. I'm sure they can still perfect the product.

I think this will be perfected like most things in the future! And i cant wait for that day to come, this is so cool and futuristic! My how far we've allready come! Its awesome! 👍♨👍you got my upvote and resteemed!

thank you!
Slowly our technology is coming closer and closer to what we see in the sci-fi movies. the future will be interesting!

Yes indeed! It moves so fast i cant keep up! Lol! As long as the future is friendly im all over it! Keep up the great work! 💙♨💙

A $3,000 toy for geeks ^^ must be fun though!

the google glass looks much slimmer and cooler!

yes I think so too, but also they have less features.

Interesting piece of technology.

Thanks for sharing @sirwinchester!

Good work. These are cool.

OMG I wanna try it so Bad!!!!

that game with the aliens looks awesome, like destiny in your living room!!

you're right, destiny in real life would be awesome! (pokemon go- style)

I saw the hololens minecraft demo a while back which was pretty impressive. Even so, I can't see myself wanting to own one even when the price and bulk are both slimmed down.

Clunky like the first cell phones. I wonder how they work. I wonder if I'd understand an explanation of how they'd work.

very interesting technology, but I think this isn't quite ready for everyday use yet

I think so too. But in the meantime, it's a fun gadget
