Pine Siskins

Here are some photos I took of Pine Siskins in California one winter. The Pine Siskin, scientific name Spinus pinus is in the finch family, related to goldfinches.

Pine Siskins are a winter irruptive species, meaning that in some winters large numbers of these birds will come to California, and in other years, much smaller numbers.

Note the yellow edges to the wings, this is an easy way to identify Pine Siskins. Also note the pointed bill and brown streaking around the face.

These birds make a vocalization that sounds like running your finger along a comb.

I hope you enjoyed these photos, my very first post to steemit.
