This is a photo of my girlfriend who maintains six pack abs all year round.
This is a photo of me. I practice what I preach and I hope that the information provided here helps you.
WHAT IS THE NUMBER ONE STEP?
- LOWER CALORIE INTAKE
This is probably the most critical element to lowering your body fat. Consumption of too many calories always results in storage regardless of the whether the increased caloric intake comes from fat, carbs, or protein. WHAT? Are you telling me that if I eat too much protein I will get fat? Yes! Of course, protein can also serve as an energy source just like carbohydrates and fats. Too much of any one of these energy sources including protein can be stored. Just because you consume a specific energy source such as protein does not mean it remains in that form. Protein will first be broken down into amino acids. Then from amino acids it will be converted into whatever your body requires. Excess protein will not be stored as muscle mass, this is just bro-science. If you do workout, of course some of the protein will go to your muscles. However, the excess protein will just be converted into glucose via the gluconeogenic pathway. I know, shocking! I was surprised the first time I learned this as well. If you want more information on this pathway please let me know and I can describe it in full detail.
This is something that not many personal trainers or so-called fitness gurus are aware of since they do not study the actual biochemical pathways of human metabolism. As a biochemist and medical student I have had the wonderful opportunity of learning about the nitty gritty of metabolism.
However, in layman’s terms, if you eat too much of anything it will be stored. The human body will only use what it requires and the rest will be stored. This goes back to the caveman days. Think about it. If our bodies weren’t programmed to store excess calories then our ancestors would not have been able to survive. The oldest dated humans, Homo erectus are currently thought to be between 2 and 3 million years old. That may seem like a long time however life on Earth began at least 3.8 billion years ago. Thus, in the grand scheme of things we haven’t had much time to evolve or change. Our metabolisms are still very much like our ancestors. It was impossible for our ancestors to eat a high calorie meal all the time. Maybe once in a while an overabundance of calories was possible but when that did occur the excess calories were stored. And that was a great thing because it allowed our ancestors to survive until the next meal.
Instead of telling you what to do, I want you to think about some of the key points that I brought up here. Do your research and homework. Question me. That’s fine. However, with due diligence I think you will come to the simple conclusion that we are just not designed to eat a ton of food. I have always remained at a low body fat naturally, meaning without drugs or supplements, all of my life, because I do not overeat. I can guarantee that if you lower your calorie consumption you will look better, you will be healthier, and you will feel much better. Good luck and I wish you the best of luck!
