You may have noticed that we are becoming ever more accustomed to fake licenses, fake recommendations, fake skill endorsements, and fake work experience. Some recruiters can afford to do thorough research into a candidate’s qualifications but most don’t have enough time to do that which results in them sometimes completely ignoring the education section of a resume. This affects the credibility of education as an institution; Skillchain aims to provide a solution for that.
Blockchain has taken data security to an unprecedented level, which resulted in the rise of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. Skillchain applies this feature to improve the role of recruiters and achieve a more fair job market.
Key Features
Edu Protocol
Skillchain is building a protocol for validation of an applicant’s academic and professional background, including college degrees, work experience, references, skills, and non-academic courses.
Skill Chain Tool
Another component of Skillchain is the Skill Chain Tool. We were unable to find out exactly what this tool does or how it works. It seems to be something similar to a smart custom CMS.
Life Skill Passport
Skillchain aims to create a secure applicant ID, or Life Skill Passport, based on the Edu Protocol and Skill Chain Tool. It will cover the user’s academic and non-academic education, work experience and acquired skills.
Roadmap
The idea development and research for Skillchain began in September 2017, the idea development and research began. API and Skillchain Tool have been under development since early this year. The launch of Skillchain Tool is scheduled for April. The Skillchain team plans to roll out the Skill Chain Edu Platform and mobile app (Android/iOS) in September.

Skillchain is headquartered in Lugano, Switzerland. The core team comprises seven specialists in marketing, product development, technology, business development, and Asian markets. It is led by founder Alfio Bardolla, an entrepreneur and founding partner of more than six companies, operating in various industries throughout Italy and Europe.

Media Coverage
The “Press Releases” section states that Skillchain has been covered by 180 international newspapers. There are publications in several major media outlets, such as BBC, Bloomberg, Financial Times, and CNBC. However, if you click through the links you will quickly discover that almost all of those are dedicated to Alfio Bardolla, the founder of Skillchain, in regard to his other businesses. The article found on Bloomberg is a press release by the company, published in the Press Releases section of the website. This seems to be purposely misleading. Of a total of ten, only four publications are articles about Skillchain.
Their Twitter account has 2,846 followiers, and their Telegram has 5,598 members.
Competition
Neither the Skillchain presentation document, nor their whitepaper, mention possible competitors or describe how the project is going to remain competitive. If you Google similar projects you will find at least one that is very close in its core idea, and several articles about the use of blockchain for similar purposes. A very similar project, EchoLink had a successful ICO last month and is now trading on Huobi and HitBTC.
Whitepaper and Other Documents
The Skillchain Whitepaper has 33 pages, a third of which cover a description and analysis of the problem that the project aims to solve, and a short guide to blockchain as a technology. Еthe other two thirds are the explanation of the technology and development process.
Conclusion
Many articles on how blockchain could be used to improve the education system have been written and published so far. The idea has been circulating long enough and it is somewhat surprising that we haven’t yet seen successful cases of its implementation. This could mean that the market simply does not have a demand for such solutions. As of the current competition, Skillchainonly has one rival that is very close in its core idea and has already demonstrated potential with its successful ICO last month. It is now trading on crypto exchanges. We would recommend watching both projects and make decisions accordingly.
The one thing that we find questionable about Skillchain is the misleading information in the media coverage section of their website.
