We are men! We take skincare seriously! We...wait what?!

in skincare •  7 years ago

I bet you did not expect this one!
Can it really be a grooming guide for men?
Are we really going there?
In this post: WE ARE!
*There's no DAMN shame in caring about your skin.
Seriously, too many of my men friends don't moisturize, like at all. Too many of my friends don't have even ONE cream. They scoff at the very idea of ever doing this. Your girlfriend has time to apply 21 creams/day and you can't do an effort for two?
I don't know about you, but I like to look as youthful as possible for as long as possible.
Do you think Clooney does not moisturize? PFF!

Anyway, here's the case for actually bringing some creams into your life.

19619644_10155163735625081_906140977_o.jpg

Skincare is something that we tend to treat very superficially as men. I know because I used to be like that. Wake up, brush teeth, go out. Why clean my face when I can, you know, wash it with water. I saw no reason to spend extra effort doing this. And for the first 25 years of my life, I did not do much. Then I got educated and old.
I kid, but really, my skin looked pretty bad.

It seems that moisturizing and cleaning the skin is good for you on many levels: prevent wrinkles, premature aging, not looking like you've been spending your life on a horse....though some might like that. But it's also the FEEL of your skin, no more tight, dry, ichy sensation that we sometimes get. Ultimately, is about health. The cool part is that it takes such a little effort to see really fast and noticeable results. Just don't be a lazyass.

RULE 0

If you are over 30, don't spend time in the sun. Like ever. Pretend you are a vampire and your life will be better. Sun will damage your skin faster than anything else. There's a reason guys like Karl Lagerfeld wear gloves all the time. If you think being tanned is sexy and really like the beaches, fuck it! WEAR SUNSCREEN, like 50spf+ sunscreen. Re-apply often.
If your skin hurts by the end of the day: YOU FAILED!

Don't believe me? READ this article. Bill is a guy who spent his life driving a truck, half his face exposed to the sun. Notice the difference?

Now let's begin. Here's the most minimalist, easy, fast and practical routine possible:

  • wash your face
  • moisturize
x2 ( once in the morning, once at night)
    THE END.

How hard is that really?
Use something else than a soap. Soap is not great for the face anyway. If you really want soap, this amazing special dr. bonner soap is the NUTS. This is a soap that can be used for everything and it's all natural and good for you, the earth and your relatives. I should write a whole post about it but you can just discover it yourself. GOOGLE IT/BUY BUY BUY.

Of course, any other washcream is good. Nivea makes some good cheap one for men. I also like a firm called BullDog.

If you are really HARDCORE, buy a scrubbing cream and use it once a week. It will hurt a bit maybe but I love the after-scrubbing feel. Smooth and MANLY. (cough)

Now that the skin is clean, time to apply a moisturizer. This will hydrate your skin for the day, sometimes even protect it against sunt if it has added SPF and keep it looking "healthy". That's why some people look "luminous" while other seem like "zombies". MOISTURIZE!

I am a huge fan of this firm called AESOP. Expensive but good shit. This cream is like 50e, but it lasts 3 months so....

Once you start to be passionate of these things you start looking for alternatives. There are a ton!
I recently switched to a local brand called NN.

19553088_10155163735630081_21038560_n.jpg

To apply just put a little quantity in your hand, apply on face and rub in circular motions until...oh fuck that! just make sure there's non visible on your face and it does not feel like your face could hold the next skating olympics. You are good to go!

That's kind of it....
Unless...
You are better than most.
aka --> you have a beard!

In this case, it's a good idea to keep it fresh, clean and luxurious. Use the double combo of a shampoo + oil. It smells amazing, feels like heaven and everyone will be in awe ( well, everyone is anyway in awe when you have a beard ).

I get told constantly that I look younger than my 30+ age. It's nice.
Now stop being a pu$$y about skincare and grab those creams off the shelf.
You can do it!

Yay, I loved this! There's a reason there are barbershops too - guys like to be groomed aswell!

more and more lately!!

actually gonna get a haircut soon :D I'll send you a photo.

Yeees! Looking forward!

Just a quick question about those of us with short facial hair. Should I be using both a moisturizing cream as well as beard shampoo/oil or should I only moisturize the bare skin and shampoo/oil the actual hair?

If your beard is short ideally you shampoo/wash it before (at least rinse if you aren't showering) then apply moisturizer. Oil is only needed if you have a longer beard. If you can easily bury your fingers in it, oil it or condition it. If not, just use moisturizer, as putting oil on your skin is not particularly good to say the least.

Got it. Thank you for the advice. I will stick to simply moisturizing as there is nowhere to bury any fingers on my face.

Great stuff!

But some people have very sensitive skin which leads to irritation and marks on skin.
Some of them are using home made skin care stuff.
They both work equally and result are better.

But if we see these stuff they are cool and can be used by everyone because the chemical quantity in them are low which is cool

Yeah being a redhead I've found my skin is naturally super sensitive but I've always had success with the more expensive, better quality or organic/natural products :)

A nice post indeed. Skin is an important organ and we need to look after it as well. But I don't take skincare seriously, yet I use a moisturiser with sun protection before I leave for my office. I do use some cleansers at evening after coming back home after a hectic Work day. That's it!

Great post and great tips I will certainly do it !! will follow, please keep me updated :)

When I have decent funds I'll buy such products. For now, I'll have the peach, please.

hilarious :))
You can buy like NIVEA level or so for 10$ :) lasts a lifetime

Lol, I use the $4 Nivea body lotion and that's about it.

Great post. Men really need to stop living by age-old stereotypes and look after their skin! I use special moisturiser, beard oil and eye cream, and I'm pretty damn proud of it!

PEACH!

I love your post! To few men indeed don't take moisturizing seriously... I hope you can convince @menta with your post hehe! At least he is hydrating with coconut water every day! My go-to product is also quite simple too... coconut oil! Just love that stuff for body and cooking!

coconut oil is a miracle thing to be honest...you can use it for literally everything. From kitchen to skincare to bedroom :D
It's quite amazing and I am not convinced that it's not on par with all these fancy creams! And it smells wonderful.

You guys I imagine need a lot of sunscreen though :D

Almost never use it! Shades are nice hehe

Lol wasn't expecting this from you today. I thought you will be talking about crypto crash rally or something. Thanks for sharing this though!

Men, women we all have to take care of the wrapping we got!
Great post

Amazing dude - finally I understand! (you joined july 2016 and was very very active and determined until today^^)
You explained to me really in the only way I would understand
Perfect! Thank you

Moisturizers don't work. None of my dermatologist colleges recommend these products. They are expensive and don't produce their claimed effects. Don't waste your money on this. Use your common sense.

My reaction to those people

A real unexpected article but this does not mean is less good. I will see if I can convince my boyfriend to pay attention to this. I'm not a big fan of all the rutine either so I'm not the best example. Maybe it's time for both of us to start thinking more of our skin. (I was born in Constanta, sun burns were there every summer)

:)) thanks for the comment.
I for one feel great after all this routine. It's confidence-inducing but you do you.
Think about it like that: do you really like brushing your teeth? :)

actually I do :))) but yeah, I believe I did not when I started

Great post and guide, thanks for posting.

:)) great name!!

Cheers!

What are your tips against acne?

go to a dermatologist

good shower gel and aftershave gel and we're done

We are men, we take our beard seriously!

Nice post
I will follow you, I hope you follow me too :)

thanks for the guide! i'm someone who washes his face regularly. but man, that picture of the truck driver, that's crazy! fascinating and scary at the same time.

I am 36 years old! And I've never moistened my face! We need to think about your proposal!

:)) achievement unlocked.

We have to clean and maintain our skin smooth too

Hi @razvanelulmarin I have to say that I have never used any creams or whatever. Not even soap touches my skin. When I went on vacations to very sunny countries I used a sunblocker and some olive oil.
When people ask my age they cannot believe it when I tell them the numbers.
Usually they are 10-15 year off.
So please do not get sucked into this cunsumer driven world all they want is too make money of you. Sorry to say.
I would go to a sauna and get a nice massage instead and eat as healthy as you can afford :)
Nowadays organic food is way cheaper then a few years ago almost the same as the regular food.
Whats on the inside will show on the outside :)

I also use a shaving cream that is really cool.

Great post as i also wrote for health and beauty tips

Nice article, I am ignoring this too!

:D not for long!

great post

I was expecting this! With all the make-up tutorials increasing as more people join steemit. It was about time one for men emerged haha! I don't use moisturizers though, not a real fan of them. The trimming though, I've got a beard going cause I got lazy. Don't get lazy like me! HAHA Cheers! GREAT INFO.

#follow4follow

Now during the summertime it's a little bit shady to not show my face to the sun :D Good article.

"Do you even moisturize bro?" Hahaha. Keep it soft and silky my friend.

Bold! Guys shouldn't be shamed for taking care of their body or skin. You tell 'em. Also, living in Arizona (the surface of the sun, basically) I have seen the damage the sun has over the years. It's no joke! WEAR SUNSCREEN. Like Nike said, just do it! ;)

Following and looking forward to reading more from you! ...unless it's a Part 2 post on Manscaping, in which case I'll probably pass. lol

everyone needs soft supple skin, not dry cracked skin. i'm all for health.

What if your skin is really scarred? Would my patchy road-rash skin still benefit from lotions?

probably even more..though I am not an expert.

Salut, felicitari pentru continut ! Ai follow, daca doresti poti sa arunci o privire si asupra contului meu https://steemit.com/@claudio333, mersi ! Si bafta !

I've always used moisturizer, I don't like having dried tight skin where it flakes because it's so dry.

Drinking plenty water helps with keeping skin hydrated too.

Plus I smell GOOOOOOOOD!

Hell yeah :D
American psycho peel off mask.gif

I had to learn the hard way to take care of my skin. I have always had various problems with my skin throughout the years. So I learned to prevent the skin from drying out and also important for me to protect it from the sun at all times with suntan lotion. For me its is mandatory to do it, for you it might be more a matter of choice, but it would still be healthier to take good care of your skin, its a very important and biggest organ we have actually. Also as we are getting older average, who knows we might become 200 years old soon, it might be good to keep the skin better intact with some help...

Nothing feminine about taking care of your skin and preventing your face from looking like a catcher's mitt later in life. Daily moisturizing makes you look younger!! Great post!

totally agree :D

I will print this out and look at it everyday

Who made the idea that men dont groom themselves?

I think thats more of an American idea, Europeans tend not to be so uptight with things like that

Hi. I agree with much of what you say.

Personally, I limit my time in direct sunlight. I have had some bad sun burns as a young man but also I know theres a lot of UV radiation in that sun light. That's ionizing radiation.... I take vitamin D3, instead.

D3 is one of the best supplements together with magnesium.

With magnesium. Hmm, Ill need to look that up and find out why.

Great post! After reading this from the guys perspective this is the extra push to do what my wife has been telling me for 8+ years.. to moisturize. I use the Dr Brommers soap on occasion. Their peppermint soap definitely tingles when you are scrubbing. Thanks again!

i use nivea ,they are cheap and best
