Slavery is bad.

Got it? Good.

Okay, so, how can we not see many of the founders, and framers of these united States as racists and hypocrites when many of them had slaves?

Well, this might surprise some leftists; but, the founders and the framers were born before these united States existed. Washington, Jefferson, and (I'll get into him in more detail soon) John Randolph inherited property, with a lot of debt, that they didn't fully own. The slaves were a part of that estate in the pre-constitution United States.

These three men specifically, actually did what they could to free slaves by circumventing the laws, and the debts of their families.

Washington, after his presidency, took several of his slaves to Europe and offered to let them stay, which several did, in order to avoid the laws of the anti-capitalist South. Jefferson did the same when he travelled to France; but, his slaves elected to stay with him.

Randolph was something special, though. He, like Washington, died without having children; but, it seems that Randolph chose to not have children so there would be no fight over his will.

When Randolph knew that he was dying, he called upon a white doctor who he knew would be respected in the South. Randolph demanded the doctor not leave until he was dead. According to witness accounts, Randolph's last words were to declare that the portion of his will regarding his slaves were true, and accurate, and shall be carried out -- that they should all be freed, and have land purchased for them in a free state.

I guess Nikole Hannah-Jones just glossed over that part of history.
