Day 39:) Zizzing

In the free time you may be drowsing mostly. After all sleep is one of the most precious things for us. Perhaps, there are people who can do with forty wink any time during the day.

Why do we have a nap?

Give your intelligent device, brain, a chance to think. We spend a third of our life time being asleep. It’s embarrassing to say that we don’t have a proper answer to it though there been so much of advancement in science and technology. Let’s explore the theories related to our beauty sleep

Firstly, as per energy conservation theory there is decrease in our metabolic activities and we consume very less energy. Secondly, as per restoration theory the body needs sleep to repair the tissues and muscles. That’s why we are asked to rest more after we meet an accident. Thirdly, as per plasticity theory, the brain flushes the waste from the central nervous system.

How many hours do we need to drowse?

The norm has been there for 7-8 hours of zizz for the adulthood. There are no fix numbers, how many hours you got to doze off. There are people who snooze 4 hours or even less than that and some take more than even 10 hours. The body adapts to the sleep pattern. We need to listen to our body and adjust the timings accordingly. According to Jain literature, Lord Mahavir, the 24th Trithankar, slept only around 48 minutes in the span of 12 and half years. Where there is will there is a way. He was able to do because he was devoting his time to meditation and fasting.

Why do we doze off at night? Why it is not the other way around?

It is because of the hormones and metabolism. Our body release melatonin which induces sleepiness. Its good to have complete dark while you slumber and complete brightness when you aren’t.

What happens when we don’t sleep?

We lose on our attention and memory capabilities. As per the research, the rats totally deprived of sleep died within 2-3 weeks. That’s why no such experiments have been done with human beings.

Even we have sleep debt. We generally postponed our siesta during the exams or parties. We take more nap in the later days to compensate.

Its our choice how we want our sleep pattern. You have the precious free time now to ponder upon it and change the pattern accordingly in the next 20 days.
